Foot ware for dry sand beach hunting????

zeekeys

New member
I am getting up in the golden years and have come back to detecting 4 years ago. I only do dry sand beach detecting, no water detecting. Well, I can go out every day if I want. I have been going out 5 or 6 days a week for weeks, only for a few hours at a time.
The Question: What do you guys ware on your feet???
My knees, calfs and soles of my feet are hurting and I mean hurting. I have tried tenner shoes, rubber shoes, hard soled shoes, sandals, extra wide shoes. I am thinking of some kind of hiking shoes or boot next?
I really would appreciate your help because I can only do beach detecting and may have to give up detecting again.
Any help would be appreciated.....Z

Dumb question but have you tried barefooted? I'm not sure what kind of beach you're on or if this is practical or not but if the problem is shoes you'll know pretty quickly. Are the beaches really sandy?

Fresh water beaches and some deep sand and some hard wet sand. No I have not tried bare footed. I think when I use my foot to push the sand scoop in I would have even worse foot problems? Thanks ....Z

I would not recommend going bare foot.
I have first hand experience of sparkler wire and rusty iron sand fencing.
Straight thru the scoop and sticking into my shoes or sandals
I beach hunt sand, wet sand and the surf. For the most part I wear sandals or water shoes on the surf.

A friend of mine uses scuba diving boots but he complained they bothered his feet from lack of arch support so he purchased a pair of GEL inserts for this years vacation.
I only get to beach hunt once a year on vacation and this year I purchased a pair of CROCS SPECIALISTS they have a good arch and seem very comfortable, but I will not know how they will be with several days on the beach but I will find out next week.
Allot of doctors, nurses wear this shoe being on their feet all day long in the hospitals.

See my post in the E-Trac section about knee pads. What's the problem with the feet? Is it the abrasion from the sand that gets inside? Does something hurt all the time while doing it? Might want to have a MD (not metal detector...doctor) take a look. I am an old fart and a lot of time I have pain from just doing it too long. The off the shelf arthritis pain releivers help a lot. As non specific as your post is about WHAT kind of problem it is, it makes it harder to offer suggestions that aren't a WAG. Jim

Last year I had a stress fracture of one of my bones in my foot. I had to wear socks and my lace up boots for support after it healed. My foot doctor said I had to wear shoes because the shifting sand was not a good idea (barefooted). And I wear crocs now.

I hope you can figure something out that will help you be more comfortable!

stand that little job stuck between your toes.
in 2007 i discoverd FLIP FLOPS BY CROCS.....................nice soft solid rubber jobs...................rubber all over and great support.

i have never looked back, buy a new pair ever may..................i did find out they shrink bad from the sunlight or something, size 10's now are really size 8.

where them deep in the waves..........sometimes one will get off, but light and float straight to the beach.................come in various colors.

f y i.....................just my opinion
now
some of the guy shere where dive boots...................some wear chocos and one or two do go barefooted as i did for 8 or 9 years.

Appreciate the replies. Thanks a million. Will try the Crocs. Thanks Jim I know about the common everyday arthritis pains. I have a hip fusion and both knees aren't in the best of shape. The soles of my feet are taking a real big hit walking on the sand so much. I am taking a week off to let knees/legs heal up. Knees swelled up and tight like rubber bands around them.
Doc thinks I should sit around, take it easy and wait for the reaper. He is going to have to find me. :detecting: I am only 68 and feel very good except for the knee/leg pains that started this summer. Detecting has become a very big part of my life the last four years. Enough!!!
Thanks again.....Z

I use vasque hiking boots for dry sand, good support. . I wouldnt use scuba diving boots in the dry sand your feet will sweat something horrible (If it is hot )
Another advantage to the hiking boot instead of sneakers is they keep the sand out shoe .. Sand sometimes irritates you feet.

US military desert boots. Can get them at any surplus store. Excellent for almost any situation but sand is what they were designed for. Fantastic arch support and no problem if you need to leverage the scoop with leg power. They last forever.

I think if I die, I will be buried in mine. They are that comfortable.

I wear the Proton 4 by Teva. I've had mine for a while now, they really hold up and protect the feet. Heres a link to a picture of them.

P.S. part of the problem sounds like your walking in sugar sand and your getting the stairmaster workout of your life...no wonder everythings hurting...lol

The heel puts you in a up right position less fatigue in calves! wide fit.

I splurged on a pair of Shamano Evair "crock" style fishing shoe.
They have holes at the sole and will let me shake the sand out without taking off the shoe.
Very comfortable beachwear and the sloes are revolvable and replaceable.
Plus ... they have a brass ring on the top to check your detector with while you are hunting.

With every post, I am glad I asked for help. It looks like others have had the same problems and tried out different foot ware to fit their needs. I have enjoyed the e-mails also, thanks.
I think that Dig probably has part of the answer. Exercise hurts!! I am a little fat guy that hasn't exercised in decades. Well at least until the last four years since metal detecting. I have lost well over 20 pounds just metal detecting. This spring I have been going out much more than I have been in the preceding springs. I thought that I had built myself up enough to push myself a little more than usual, but alas not to be done :nono: I am old and still out of shape so like grumpyolman says when it hurts stop and take it easy....
Thanks for reading .....Z/Jerry
