went to a park this morning I have been to before, I started grid searching a small grass area near the parking lot. a few steps in and got a 12-42 at 4"... as I bent down I noticed a small 4" wide plug had already been cut...it was only 2" deep... well another 2" and I had my first wheaty of the day... well long story short there was roughly 40-50 small plugs cut all over the small grass section... every one had a signal, but they left the bottlecaps, pull tabs, foil, and all the other junk and just covered it up and moved along. I was kind of pissed but after my 3rd wheaty from a plug that they dug I checked all the previous plugs and filled my trash pouch while doing so... I know it must have been a beginner, but all the trash signals were decent enough that I would have dug them on a "dig all" day anyway...so they must have had some knowledge...

Sad but these idiots are all over the place

I tried a school a last year and noticed someone had been digging big plugs next to the building where it was shady.
I found quite a few coins they missed along the way, and replaced the plugs… they did not even put the plugs back in the hole!!
They had to be using a full sized shovel by the looks of the holes.
I am seeing more sign of others digging in the last several years.

^^^ yep seen the same thing at a ball park. The plug (10" round and 4" deep) still had the pop can connected to it. Obvious to anyone that a 'metal detector' dug it. Pissed me off cuz maintenance guys know I detect there. Hopefully they know I don't do that but it could bring new no detecting rules there.

I had that happen to me about two years ago at my hometown park that dates back to the 1860's or so. I was furious!!! I made a point to fill the holes back in and later informed the director of parks and recreation, game warden, and grounds keeper, to assure them that any holes they find in the future, are not mine. newbies or not, its just plain LAZY!!!

Same scenario here. Discovered some rather large plug tops that were shallow. The grass was already turning brown and at one point they dug three adjoining holes and left the smashed can there.
I went to the University Facility Maintenance and made arrangements to have the head grounds guy me us on site. He was not happy but didnt blame us as he was a bit familiar with our style.
Im pretty sure someone with a cheapy detector that had no pinpoint or target ID (beep and dig) was just randomly detecting loud signals. The University increased checking anyone with detectors for permits, problem has nearly gone away.

A while ago I seen someone out in the park with a metal detector and a regular shovel digging away. So I stopped and went out to talk to him. He told me that he had just bought the metal detector and did not know what was expected of him. I took some time and explained a few things to him about filling his holes, taking the trash with him ect. As I explained to him what was expected of him he told me thank you for taking the time to explain things to him.

For that reason i elected to practice for months in my own yard before i ventured out in the general public to detect. (y)

SAD! But each detectorist has to begin & aren't perfect but as they continue: Since Practice makes PERFECT, they will become perfected & make them ownselves happier by digging up more & better finds! There are those who go from city to city hitting the parks, quickly, leave holes uncovered with junk exposed leaving the areas unsightly & Park Rangers angry--then laws are made for closing areas to Md'ING & from taking old coins & relics--claiming antiques belong to the city (them really)! Therefore, the more we fill holes & repair damages when finding them, it will help keep parks & etc. open to swing, dig & recover lost values & antique goodies! It may slow your time down for detecting fun that day but worth it! I did it a lot in the 80's, 90's until 2007 when I had to QUIT, as my ill brother was with me & I became too ill, also! All good times end & even bad ones & Thank God Jehovah for that! Amen! Keep on DETECTIN'! How's your mom & huntin' partner doing? Still praying for them & many others in need of Healing Prayers! Ma

I see this all the time. I always check the plugs I see and most have the junk that was dug laying near the plug. One of the lawn mowing guys at my favorite park told me that this was happening. Big, messy plugs with crushed aluminum cans laying next to the plug. I know who did this and confronted him in a calm manner and he denied being the culprit. I got my point across.

You had me going there for a minute. I thought that you had pulled in behind the Residential limmo. Congrat's on the saves from others cut plugs and for doing the right thing.

I was being an idiot by playing chicken with the cars 🤭 all I wanted to do was get to the other side to bury my nuts in the city park 😂😂😂
