Fisher F5 5 inch search coil. Anyone out there tried it?

Lizz

New member
I just got a really god deal on a Fisher F5 5 inch dd search coil. Has anyone out there tried it and what do you think? I have been hunting some house spots that have a lot of trash and I'm hoping this little coil will help. Any pointers would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It's a great coil for the F5, even in non trash area's. I've found many coins with it in ground that I've been over with the stock 10" coil in open ball fields and parks last year.

Thanks BH Landstar. This will be the first time I've hunted with a smaller coil and I'm looking forward to it! I'm on a couple old house spots and the ground is so trashy when I dig a signal there is glass and all kinds of stuff in the holes. I'm hoping with this coil it might be a little easier to zoom in on some old coins.

Gotta have a sniper in the trash... a night and day difference in unmasking. You'll like it Lizz.

You will end up loving it Lizz, for those trashy spots. The funny thing about using a small coil, at least for me, I tend to slow down and hunt more precise. Enjoy it and good luck. HH jim tn

It is the coil I hunt with the most. great depth and surgical precision. I also bought the 11dd but it doesnt get used that much

Take care
Bob

I got 45 minutes in this morning with the 5 inch coil and BAM! I dug a nice flat button. I think I'm going to love this coil.

Hello,I am a bit late on this thread.,lol,.I too have got a good price on a 5 inch Fisher Coil (From Ed in TN),and I did a few test's.Here in Penna, this winter 2015-16,we have not got much snow.Just the past week we finally got our first inch,2nd week in Feb,now tomorrow,Rain will melt the little snow we have got,So I am back on my way out hunting.,lol,.I know by saying this,I will get some nay-sayer's,But DONT BE BOUND by the level your unit can ID with confidence. Then one will be 4-8 inches down.I study every little peep.Sometimes I dig a 4 inch path to wave my coil,to see if I get a different reading once In on a target a bit. These Machine's can read much deeper than the Display can admit. If one is using their unit to ID what they dig,you will be bound to a certain depth.Sure it's nice to be able to trust a unit and the F5,and many other good brands, one can trust. But only to a certain depth.Dont be bound by only going after what your machine can tell you about. The deeper hit's,not many machine's can read accurate down so far.I follow sound.I will get one tiny peep with my head phones on.Without the phone's,I would of missed the sound.Earlier era's,Had less waste.Chances of yanking a beer tab over a foot down is slim. Two weeks ago,At local college's nature trail.I pulled up a victorian Era Door Knob trim.It was like 13 inches deep.Ill dig those everytime. It just as well could of been something to write home about. The person I hunt with, over 70 yrs old.He runs a Garrett 1500 that is 14 years old.He goes by sound and if he showed you his J-pot binder where his goodies are displayed, you'd try to mimic what he does,as I do.These Machines will send a HINT,much deeper than the Unit will Identify correctly. Many time's,Follow your unit,But be prepared to go off on your own on a target. That is how to strike it rich.I love my fisher 5 inch coil.I have done test's and I didnt lose anything in removing the stock 10 inch. But I gained a ton.I can fit the coil into mature tree trunks, close to rocks,..Also dont need a pointer. The unit is so much lighter and from knees use the coil as my pointer.I dont care where I hunt.I will walk in the deep wood's,Hear one little peep and I know by the sound, what depth range the item is located.I have yanked items up from 15+ with my fisher F5.The one's who try to chop up my comment's,I wish could come hunting with me.lol,.I use the display most time's,But if I hear a deep peep,I dont walk on bye..DONT BE BOUND BY WHAT YOUR UNIT CAN ADMIT on the display,Be cheating yourself.

Those faint sounds are were the silver is now days, the clad is shallow and loud. I also run the f5 but I use the 11" DD coil and it works well for me. The best combination for a quality find is high steady #s on the ID screen with less than 25% on the confidence meter than usually equals deep( more than 5") .

Hello,,I failed to mention I use my unit in D1 tone..The D1 =Scrim mode 1,allow's for signal to be judged by Strength. When I first got my F5 then added the 5' Fisher coil,I couldnt understand why only once in awhile I would be able to use the unit in the manner I spoke. It was due to not having it in D1 mode. The other mode's allow's for judging target by sound tone and depth cant be judged only by what the unit is bound by and admit's.By using the unit in D1,the signal strength and depth can be judged down more than what the unit can admit.Once I realized, and in certain hunting condition's,I get very deep targets.I am sure I pass much, but the one's I want are down 8 inches plus.I am no expert, only can claim what works for me.I never tried the 11'DD coil, but I honestly love my F5 and cant wait to get out with it.I know everyone does what works for them, but do me a favor when your out next with your 11DD coil.Set your threshold to a tiny backround whine,Set the tone in D1,nixing out all up to "TAB",and try it in that mode.I use phone's and sometime's I ignore the display.I started doing much better not allowing to be bound by how far the display can admit.Even Fisher labs will admit, all unit's can only judge down so far.Past a certain point I've hit great silver item's and ignored the display and judged by tone alone.I hunt with a friend who is in mid-70's,and uses a outdated Garrett 1500.Obviously in site's with heavy human traffic, the tone manner you speak of is probably best,so one dont spend the day digging junk..But many time's we hunt anywhere we can, open wood's included in private property.Isnt as much human junk..Then set it to D-1,then in D1 your judging by tone strength and not a different tone for what metal. When I hear some complain about depth with the F5,I think it's being bound by the sound ID of the display, while the unit can detect much deeper, just after a certain depth,All unit's cant be trusted. If one is in high traffic area, your method is better. In less traffic condition's,signal's are less frequent,so one is happy to dig everything, lol. Here in Penna,we didnt get our first inch of snow where I live until 2 weeks ago,Now rain last night. This Sat and Sun will be 48 both days.We got permission to hunt this historic district of a nearbye town where a sign is up,The first school house was erected in 1804.Directly across the street, what used to be a wagon horse path,is a field with little patches of woods. Will be nice winter hunt.I will show a pic if I find anything to speak of.I have the stock 10 inch coil and the fisher 5',and the 5' I'll be using..I would love to learn how your 11DD would fare in D1 tone mode.Have you ever tried it without using the tone ID setting's? Where I live,Silver comes out nice,Indianhead cents are always thinned and ruined and normally past 8 inches down.

Hello Again,,,,Do you use D4 tone setting? I am Timothy,Glad to meet someone running the 11DD,..I have a ton of questions for you, lol,. I also wonder if when your in low traffic area's,did you ever try the D1 setting?...The manner I spoke of,I wouldnt do at a Park or carnival grounds.,lol,.Id be digging to much junk.,lol,.I often hunt Anywhere..As long as the unit is on,Im a Huntin, lol,.If targets are not every 5 foot,I use the D1 and I find coins and many relics from Horse tack.Like bridal hoop/ring's,Buckles,etc..Going by signal strength or the tone setting's you speak of,just cant beat these F5's for the money. Can do so much. Most dont realize these have so many mode's to try,so many adjustment's possible for every situation.I know being able to tell what your digging before you touch soil is nice advantage. But to do that, one is only going as deep as the unit can read. That is all I was meaning. The option is there to chase deeper targets, just will be blind. It's paid off for me many time's.I am simple though,I am even happy digging the horse tack, lol,.

Judge, this 1 tone setting your talking about is the first time I've heard that, my thoughts were when you went to 1 tone you were setting the detector up as a beep and dig detector. I've had my f5 for over two years now and I'm still learning new things all the time. On my next hunt I'm going to try that 1 tone setting and see how it works for me.

D1 is VCO audio. VCO audio is great in my opinion. Has it's place for sure and I use it quite often.

I'm trying to remember if you change the pitch in All Metal if it carries over to D1. I know it carries over to pinpoint but I dis-remember if it carried over to D1.

That is one of the things I like about the new 8500.

Thanks for posting about D1, Judge.

Mike

Hello Mike,,Great to meet you.I am glad you understand what I was trying to say as I am not up on all the expert term's,Yet I Do put the time in to understand my unit.Exactly as you said, there IS a time and hunting condition one can really reach great depth if they are NOT bound by the depth the display admits. Many when they hunt, they mainly think of location's with much human traffic to imagine anything but using the target ID the unit can reach,to avoid junk digging wasting the day.My friend and I,we hunt anywhere and everywhere.Might hunt 2 hours for that one HIT.,but that one hit end's up a amazing find, more time's than none.In my F5 Manual,it call's the D modes as Discrimination mode 1-2-3-4,,,I never thought to check if that type pitch signal mode as D1, existed in AM mode,Great question..We sometime's just go hunt the wood's.Not as much human traffic,so less junk.Might not dig as much, but when we do,Chances go up for it being a good item.I do know the D2-D3-D4,like "Still Looking 52" mentioned,,hunt's by tone Id-ing the item before breaking ground. For beach's etc,I bet that is best manner to hunt.In another forum I got pounced on,and I dont think they realized what I meant.,lol,.Then I found in the book,Default setting start's at D2,so if one dont manually set their unit in D1,they wont know what I meant. It's the only mode where the Unit dont ID the target by tone pitch. D1,has one tone. The deeper the target, the less the tone. With my phone's,Id hear one little peep, then my heart bounces up in my throat.lol,..I never thought to see if that same method exist's in Am modes..Personally,where I hunt here,I get deep items.I can only speak for what works best here for me in the places I go.I think F5 has many option's.To use the unit's Awesome Brain,it sacrifices depth. The book does say the deeper the item, the less one can trust the Unit's target ID.If I lived in the city,Where I would spend most of my time in spot's with much human traffic,I too would use the units brain. For all I know,Hunting deep stuff,I could skip and miss recent shallow goodies.I am no expert, lol,.But I can tell already,I will like this forum and have a ton of questions for other's using the same unit.I am going out on the weekend, going to be 48 sat and sun.I will see the AM modes..Great meeting you Mike.

Hello Mike, I am going to check into the new 8500 as I am not familiar.I dont know what VCO mean's as well.,lol,.But if it's the name of the function D1 is associated with,I hope ALL F5 user's realize it.When I hear some review's saying 4-6 inches,I am afraid to speak for fear of being called to argue.,lol,.To be honest,I rarely use any other mode.I am digging far beyond 4-6 inches on targets.lol,..Finding junk down so low is seldom as well,Less waste back then.Silver preserves well here, but early wheat's and IH cents, thin out badly.Everything good I dig is normally past 7-10 inches down. When you mention carried over into pinpoint mode. Now you say that,It is the same tone.Book says using it in PP mode, create's drift with time and must be re-set.But I guess that is a manner to take advantage of both.Using the brain,Yet still being able to pop into a D1 form.Is that what you were meaning?Your the first person I met who understood and PP mode and D1,does add up now you mentioned.Just having it in D1,it wont drift, but then we lose the advantage of target ID tone.Do you combined the 2? With your F5? Does that work the same?I am going to try that out on the weekend as well....Never occured to me. As far as the 8500,I still have alot of growing with my F5,but I'll keep that in mind for next upgrade. My F5 with 5' fisher coil in D1 mode,I never been so happy with a rig..It's nice to be able see what hitting the J-pot feel's like...Appreciate the Info,Enjoy your Night..
