Has anyone noticed a trend as of late. I just spoke with someone who I guess had a conversation with Kellyco about minelab. They said that they have closed one factory down and opened another and the lurch between the open and close of the two is the cause for disruption in production. Has anyone else heard that? They said that they had not opened a China factory (as I have been told by many). They just seem to have put their logistical foot in a bucket. Same thing with Tesoro. I have been interested in a Sandshark for the last 6 months and you still cant get your hands on one of those either. It's irritating. Anyone know whats going on with either of these companies?

Tesoro's waterproof connectors, you can change coils with theirs, are not available as the supplier suddenly stopped producing them. Tesoro tried to get another supplier, but no success. Now they have their own injection molding machine being installed and after they are sure that it will be a quality reliable product, they'll start making them again. The only way to get a Tiger Shark or a Sand Shark is by tightly watching the classifieds and being the first offer on a new listing.
I hunt just freshwater. I do have 2 Tiger Sharks, one set up for wading and the other for diving, a Fisher 1280-X, and a White's Dual Field. You might want to take a good look at the Dual Field. There has been lots of good press on it and I like mine so far. I kind of like to try different manufacturers and see the differences myself. I did not like the Excalibur...but think maybe I didn't give it a good enough try and mine went back to Minelab two times. I sold it on the forum, right after it came back from ML the second time ($200) and told the buyer about my problems with it.
I might be ready to try the Excal again. If we decided to do a year or so on the road traveling the US coast line from Washington to Maine, I'll definitely get an Excal.
One thing I can't figure...why did Whites make a floating coil for a water machine? To me it's a hassle. You locate the target, let go of the coil and dig. While you are digging the coil floats and moves away from you. I like it to stay where you last left it until you want it again. Because I dive I had to put sand in a plastic hose and wire tie that to the coil until it was neutral. Annoying to look over where you thought you left the coil and then have to find it floating somewhere above your head tethered by the coil cord. Working the wet sand or dry sand no weight on the coil is a bonus. In the water it rotts.
Wish the detector manufacturers could get together and have a standard headphone connector that would work with any machine as well as waterproof coil connectors that would be universal. You can get 100s of different spark plugs but they have agreed on about 3 thread patterns and sizes for the automobile. And...most underwater machines are hard wired. What if you want to change coils or headphones? That's not an option unless you do a mod and void the warranty. jim

and moved production to a facility in Malaysia which is owned by a company that does plenty of military specification work. Hopefully this will improve components through quality control inspection and manufacturing processes through ISO 9000.
I sure hope they figure out how to test Excaliburs before they hit the end users. Haven't had problems with Explorers, Sovereigns, Xterras, or Etracs, just the Excals.

hardwiring would probably be the answer as thats how most machines are done and those connectors are readily available through several manufacturers.
I would suspect with tesoro they probably have a bunch of the control housings drilled out to accomodate the larger fitting for the connector that allows you to change coils, and/or they just want to keep things standardized. Tesoros only coil options are the 7"/8"(standard coil)/10" for the Tiger and I imagine its close to that for the Sand Shark, so whats the big deal with a 2" max difference in coils. I mean really what are you gaining or loosing by having the option to change coils. not much.

I bought a whites dual field, very happy with the build quality and performance was good but once I got it in the water and chest deep it was a chore to work with that coil. who at whites let that pass as being a good idea? a water detector whose coil floats?

Would have been easy for Tesoro to either hard wire or go with a different connector. Tesoro is making sure they maintain compatibility, can continue to support the water machines they have already sold and not make them obsolete. To me that says something very positive about the company.

Also Tesoro has, in the past, made the wide scan, 3X11 (I think that's the size) waterproof with the connector so it could be changed and used by the Tiger Shark. I even saw a Wide Scan in the classifieds that someone had laying around only it was for the Sand Shark. Rumor...and I emphasize rumor, has it the wide scan is really a killer on the Tiger Shark. I hope I can get Tesoro to put one of their new connectors on a wide scan so I can use it on my TSs. jim
