First Run with My New Excalibur

I received my Excal on Friday and had a chance to get out with it today. There is a fresh water beach on a dammed up creek nearby. They hauled in sand to make it very nice. It's been in use for many, many years.

I do have a few questions and will post pictures below.

I had the machine running Disc on 1 (no Discrimination), Sensitivity at about 11 O'clock, Volume at about 3/4, Threshold - barely hearing the buzz and in Disc not Pinpoint. It seemed like the Excal would lock onto to the pitch of the last targeted item for a while and then tone down. There were times when it seemed to go crazy like there were thick targets and then I could run the same spot and get nothing.

I'm OK now. I ran it in the yard and it was rock solid. Found 2 coin in the yard during a 1/2 hour test! I think I was running into sand impurities out there.

The ring was the first thing I found and I was like "HOLY COW! If this is a sign of what will come with this machine That's gonna be Great!"

I wish I lived close to the shore!

Thanks bdahunter! I love to be hunting with you in the Bahamas!

Cool, man! You've got it...don't change a THING.

Now just get out there and run the coil over some gold and you're in the house. And if it doesn't happen before you get here, I guarantee you it will happen before you leave!

Thats a good start. Curious, how did you clean your new found ring? HH Dennis in Idaho

Duke, everything sounds just fine on the settings and you did very well for the 1st attempt. Turn the Threshold, just a hair lower than barely audible next time. This setting will allow you to hear legitamate breaks in the Threshold, that should be investigated. Dig any tone that does not null silent. Low and slow, will get you the gold. Don't even think about getting in a hurry. Keep us posted and we'll be watching you. If you have not read cjc's new Excal book, it's a good read and goes into much greater detail for running the unit.

Hey Scott, when you say he should turn the threshold "a hair lower than barely audible" don't you mean a hair HIGHER than barely audible?

Would not a "hair lower than barely audible" be...um...NOT AUDIBLE??? :)

Well, either I'm misunderstanding YOU or you are misunderstanding ME.

You are saying to run the threshold at below the level where you can hear it...in other words, NO THRESHOLD. So please explain to me how you will then hear a "break" in the threshold when you can't hear the threshold in the first place. What am I missing?

I was sure that you meant to run the threshold at a very gentle buzz, as most of us do...so you can hear subtle changes. But I don't see how you can hear a "break" in something that's not THERE. Please explain.

I started off with my home-made electrolysis tank and when the tanish was good and slimy I used silver polish to finish it.
