First Interesting Finds, Need Help w/ discrimination

After my first few times out w/ my XS, i found a 1920 walking liberty quarter, a 1945 mercury dime, a 1907 indian head, and a few wheats.
All these were found in my backyard & at my old
high school. They were found at depths of 3 -
10 inches. Im trying to learn how to discriminate between tones and cross-hair readings.. lots of junk is coming up with the same readings as the good stuff... the only sure thing so far it seems is that "28" on the digital reading means a coin-- usually a quarter.
Any hints on what to pay attention to the most before digging?
Peter
PS By the way, any explorer owners from Long Island, NY out there?

Peter, I think once you get an ear to how the good ones sound and read you will be able to tell the difference.. main thing is the good targets will generally lock on to a single solid tone and keep that tone from all angles, junk usually warbles in different tones, especially from one angle to another.. the deep or stuff in trash will be harder to distinguish, but after a whike your ear will know.. I keep mine in normal audio, just because I can hear those differences easier...

What values do you run your variability and limits settings?
