Got the Dual Field in the mail yesterday and took it out this morning for "sea trials". I hunted in the wet sand at my favorite beach even though it is pretty much sanded in and yesterday's surf advisory didn't cause any noticeable beach erosion (never saw another detector today so everyone else must think it's sanded in too). The first thing I noticed was that swinging this bigger coil would take some getting used to. My arm actually got tired pretty quickly as I tried to swing at my normal pace so I had to slow it down a bit. I was getting a fair amount of signals and not really finding too much trash although the zinc pennies were plentiful. Occasionally, I would hit a quarter, dime, or nickle- just enough to keep it interesting.
Using the DF was actually a lot of fun for me. I dug quite a few of the "whisper" signals and found several coins quite deep. I won't guess how deep but the DF definitely seems deeper than my Surf PI Pro which I think goes fairly deep. Someone said that their detector goes about as deep as they would care to dig and I think I can now say the same.
To be fair, much of what I found today could have been found with a lot of other machines, but not everything. Besides the depth, the DF seemed very sensitive to small objects as well. I found several pea sized objects and even smaller. With it's large scan area I also felt that I wasn't missing a whole lot. When I would find a "pocket" I was pretty satisfied that I got most of what was there. Pinpointing was not a problem for me at all. I just pretended that the inner coil was the only coil and I was spot on most every time.
The water was a bit rough today so I didn't really spend any time in it except to do a quick check of the coil's buoyancy. It does float but not as much as I feared. The copper and silver rings were nice surprises. The silver band was down by the water only a few inches deep. The copper ring was up in the soft wet sand and was one of the deepest things I dug today. No gold today but I was still pretty happy to find as much as I did.
