First Day Out with the DF

Goldak

New member
Got the Dual Field in the mail yesterday and took it out this morning for "sea trials". I hunted in the wet sand at my favorite beach even though it is pretty much sanded in and yesterday's surf advisory didn't cause any noticeable beach erosion (never saw another detector today so everyone else must think it's sanded in too). The first thing I noticed was that swinging this bigger coil would take some getting used to. My arm actually got tired pretty quickly as I tried to swing at my normal pace so I had to slow it down a bit. I was getting a fair amount of signals and not really finding too much trash although the zinc pennies were plentiful. Occasionally, I would hit a quarter, dime, or nickle- just enough to keep it interesting.
Using the DF was actually a lot of fun for me. I dug quite a few of the "whisper" signals and found several coins quite deep. I won't guess how deep but the DF definitely seems deeper than my Surf PI Pro which I think goes fairly deep. Someone said that their detector goes about as deep as they would care to dig and I think I can now say the same.
To be fair, much of what I found today could have been found with a lot of other machines, but not everything. Besides the depth, the DF seemed very sensitive to small objects as well. I found several pea sized objects and even smaller. With it's large scan area I also felt that I wasn't missing a whole lot. When I would find a "pocket" I was pretty satisfied that I got most of what was there. Pinpointing was not a problem for me at all. I just pretended that the inner coil was the only coil and I was spot on most every time.
The water was a bit rough today so I didn't really spend any time in it except to do a quick check of the coil's buoyancy. It does float but not as much as I feared. The copper and silver rings were nice surprises. The silver band was down by the water only a few inches deep. The copper ring was up in the soft wet sand and was one of the deepest things I dug today. No gold today but I was still pretty happy to find as much as I did. Nice looking ring, looks like that DF is a hot machine. I have lots of nails on my beaches due to fire pits from the past, but can you tell a nail from a good target? Gene

Nice finds, thank you for sharing your first impressions with the DF.

Seems to be a nice unit !

Enjoy it !

Nick

Glad you had a good first day out with the DF even if you didn't find the gold. Don't worry, the gold is coming. --Jerry

Gene, I'm getting better at separating rusty nails and bobby pins from the other signals but I still dig up a few. I'm starting to think that for the different types of beaches we have here, it would be wonderful to have a great PI machine and a great VLF machine. If I find enough with the DF I may start saving for an Excal II so that I'd have the best of both worlds. Do I understand that you can tune out those zinc pennies with the Excal? HH!

Thanks Jerry, and you were right about the air test- funny how that works. HH!

Thanks BDA, I also think it will help me not to get too discouraged when I get to the beach after other detectors have been there. My thinking is that I will still be able to get a few deep signals that they might have missed and a lot of the gold is deep, right? HH!

Nick, Thanks and you're welcome. I hope it helps someone trying to decide on a machine. I know I searched and read every comment I could find on the DF. HH!

Welcome to the DF Hunters Cadre Goldak!

"Learning to pass up nails" will lead to missed rings and coins that are on edge and possible other jewelry!

PIs come with a "dig em all guarantee"---------do it and you will do a lot of digging, but you won't miss anything!

Regards Fellow Hunter,

CJ

PS You're off to a great start!!

Thanks Mikie, It was really beautiful out there yesterday. HH!

Thanks CJ, I know that you are right but it's hard. I have probably dug more than a hundred "double beeps" already and I don't think a single one was anything decent. I'll keep trying though. HH!

Hi Tim, I live in southern California. I run the gain at about 3 o'clock, the delay at 7, and the threshold at a slight murmur. I think these are the recommended settings for maximum depth if conditions allow it but I'm still experimenting with it. I'm currently reading "Pulsepower" which has a lot of specific information on using this detector. HH!
