Finds for the last couple weeks

DFX-Gregg

Well-known member
Been using the Se most of the time but also getting the dfx in the mix. The dfx picked up some wheaties, a silver ring, tokens, dog rabies tag, Jesus pendant, elongated cent and a few other goodies.

The Se also came up with wheaties, tokens, some junk jewelry, a dog tag (says milkbone on back), also got 2 Sac dollars, giving me 3 for the year. The 42-s Merc was found today with a few wheaties.

NICE digs Gregg !:detecting:

Interesting using more than one machine eh !

I have an Explorer SE, a Tesoro Cortes, a Tesoro Tejon,
also a West Australian made VLF gold prospecting detector called a "Quantam Infinium", ~ built by "Hi-Tech Detectors...
It's a box you hang on your shoulder, ( pretty advanced in its day; ) ~ haven't used it for a few years...:beers:

Dave might remember Hi-Tech detectors; ~ hey Dave!
I also have a West Australian made "Bob Hollins" patchfinder coil for it...
Remember Bob Hollins coils Dave ?

Hi Gregg----Neat finds!--I like that Boy Scout tie clamp (for lack of a better name for it). We have found several over time and 3 of them look really old. I've got to research them sometime. I just think it's fun finding them.---I sure have admired your persistance & determinination in learning that Explorer monster--that's what it takes--and you're "getting it", that's for sure. Take care, Del

snowy i bought a detector at a garage sale for $5.00 aud it is a MINRAD made in south australia and still works the coils are made of ply laminate and the stem is bakelite got to be the oldest detector i,ve come across.terry

Hang on Doindadiggin, I see "North Geelong Victoria" on that sticker...
It was made in Victoria me thinks.

That's a collectors item for sure... Very interesting find !

Behind our shop is an old US built Gardiner, it has an 11 inch coil ( I think it's 11 inch, ) and a huge coil at least 4 foot diameter !
The coils are made of aluminum tubing !!!

Nice finds, Greg.

Are those tokens old? I've yet to find anything but modern tokens.

the tie clam p is what they call a neckerchief slide..

Hey Gregg, have you every tried hunting an area and marking it with a golf tee and then take the other detector, in the same area, and do the same to see if you hit the same things? and then dig them up.

I am interested in what you currently have your settings at now

sens mode -
sens val -
gain -
tone var -
audio sounds -
audio reponse -
fast/deep -
discrimination -

What did you change since starting with the SE

Neckerchief slide--yeah, that's what they call em. I used to be in the Scouts a hundred years ago but the name escaped me. They are fun to find when you come across them.

No the tokens are not old...in fact one is from gold-n-detectorsin Colorado...the one for $2.50 in trade. Apparently he or someone plants them when they travel and hunt.... I have found 6 from the same place in various parks over the last two years.

my arms are sore, getting out 4-5 times a week and I am still learning thanks!:beers: But next week my work shift is changing for a month or two. That means less hunting...

Well first the main thing I changed was going from slow to very slow.... After using the dfx, which I still do also...it takes me 10-15 minutes to slow back down to the pace I need to be at when using the Se. I think I have become much more patient on trying to separate signals...

As far as settings, I started by using fast the first 3 1/2 months I had my Se. I now use deep on, and continue to made changes. I like sens. in manual, usually in 23 area, with gain at either 7 or 8, tone 5-7, varibility at 8, which I may start test running at 10 soon. I use normal response and use conduct for sound. Oh and while in the learning phase I am using digital, but will start learning smartfind screen in fall.

GREGG----That was interesting about you finding those Gold-N-Detectors tokens. I didn't know they were doing that. I've been in the shop there in Golden, CO. The owners name is Bill Chapman, a really nice guy. I took a Whites Bullseye pinpointer in there once that had went "gunny bags" on me and it wasn't under warranty. Bill took it apart, repaired it and refused to take any payment for it. Bill & his partner John Vivian did a field test for Troy on his X5 when it first came out.----It's like you said, they might plant them at different places when they travel & hunt. He's got a toll free #---call him up and ask him. ha------Keep "a learnin" that Explorer, Gregg. I don't think ANYBODY could have been more screwed up with it than I was when I first started swinging it!!----I'll never forget that first hunt with it--my wife using her DFX and I was "using" the Explorer. The only thing I knew for sure is the fact that I was attempting to detect with a very strange (to me) machine. I ended up setting on a picnic table, reading the manual (again).----But after using it for some time--it just seemed like something "clicked" and the targets just kept coming deeper & better. I know confidence was in the mix to--I come to know what the machine could do, and what I could do with the machine--and that's really important.---I enjoy your posts. Later, Del

the toll free number is on the token to gold-n-detectors in Colorado. I might call him maybe with the $15 worth of tokens I can use them! Oh usually the areas where the tokens are found are very well hunted parks.

What do they ring in as? :drinking:

That's pretty cool that you've found that many.

Now that is REALLY a good question, Mattockman! Where did that "gunny bags" expression come from? It's a phrase us old guys from back in the 1700's have used for years But WHERE did it come from??--hmm--now I ain't gonna be able to sleep tonight. I know what it means--it means kaput, broke down, quit working, etc., etc. We used to have potatoe bags (100 lbs.) called gunny bags or burlap bags but they weren't kaput, broke down, quit working, etc., etc.----so then, WHERE DID THAT SAYING COME FROM??? C'mon some of you old fogeys--help me out here--I've gotta get some sleep tonight!! haaaa That edge is getting closer all the time, and I don't mean metal detector! We're GONNA get you an answer Mattockman!! Del

come in like a cent...but the funny...or not really funny part is the last one I found was the only target I got on a whole sand volleyball court!... They usually are not deep 0 to 2 inches.
