I finished up my field testing of the WOT coil on Saturday...and spent the last couple of days typing in all the notes I had jotted down during the week.
I got 11 silver last weekend...one of them coming with my first 2 hours on the WOT coil. I then hunted from last Sunday up thru this Saturday exclusively with the WOT coil for this test ...and got 11 MORE...giving me a total of 22 silver coins in that 7 day stretch
.....12 of them coming with the WOT. I believe 22 silver in a week is my best total in my 35 years of hunting.
The digging was made very easy thanks to the new PREDATOR RAPTOR tool from GEORGE LESCHE of Predatortools. I have never used anything except the original Lesche digger...but the Raptor from predatortools will be my main digger now. You can see it in the pics Guvner took of me.
The ease with which I was able to cut a nice 3 sided plug with the Raptor just made it convenient to fold the plug back in the hole.
Another thing I really liked about it was the fact that I could just simply pry and pop the plug right up if need be....thanks to the curved design of it.
I definately had NO worries of bending or breaking the Raptor when prying and digging. It's the strongest and most SOLID digging tool I've ever used.
Thanks so much George for getting it to Guvner for me to test out. It's one fine digger...the best I've ever used.

I picked out 3 parks and a personal site on very private ground to do a very thorough field test of this coil. 1 of the parks is nearly hunted out and devoid of signals....one is very trashy... and one is iron infested.
I had always heard great things about the WOT...but honestly felt 12" was the biggest coil I should use in order to maintain the sensitivity to small deep coins. Well...I was very wrong.
The first thing I noticed about it was how stable it was...which really shocked me.
I have always been told to turn the sensitivity down on the larger coils...especially the WOT. Well...I'm stubborn and didn't want to...so I left it at my comfort zone of semi auto 26 to see what would happen.
Nothing happened in my ground...and I mean nothing. I experienced very minimal falsing...and no chirping whatsoever. In fact I spent much of the hunt time at manual 26...while keeping my gain high...which is a personal preference of mine.
I knew I had a coil that was going to punch deep into the turf the first time I set it down beside me...because it picked up my digger 3' away from the coil. in fact I had to point the SE off to the right when I started to dig a plug.
The first time I put this coil on was when I met Guvner last weekend. Within an hour I had my first silver coin...an 1899 Barber quarter. True...the first two coins I dug were memorial cents from over 8" down...but the third time's a charm.
Then a short while later I dug a Dick Tracy car from 15" down...which chimed in from every possible angle as I circled the hole.
A few days later I returned to this park to see if I could pull another roosey or 2 from the old wishing well area Guvner and I hunted.
I had already pulled 10 out of there a few days before...and he nabbed 5...so it would be a challenge.
On that day I was using the pro coil...he was used a couple of different coils...and another friend was using yet another coil. Trust me...once we started finding silver...we beat this tiny area into submission.
All of the coins found that day were on edge...some very deep on edge...AND smothered in iron.
Well...to make a long story short...the WOT coil sniffed out 4 more Roosies for me on this day...and each was at the 8" mark on edge. 3 of the 4 were in iron..while one was stuck directly to the side of a big chunk sitting completely vertical.
Park #3 is another iron infested place and the EMI is also very nasty on any given day and at any given time.
It took me a few minutes here to get the settings adjusted to the EMI....but then the WOT handled it well.
I ended up dropping the gain to 8... the sensitivity to semi auto 22...and closing the iron mask to 20 in order to eliminate the biggest majority of falsing caused by both the EMI and large amount of iron in the soil.
This was the first time in 2 years I have varied from my iron mask setting of 22...but the SE just falsed and chirped too much....so I had no choice.
I was able to pull out 3 keepers from this crazy place...a merc from 8"... an Injun from 8"....and the Civil War Musicians button from 9"...and again both coins were on edge.
Park #4 is a place where I pulled 2 seated dimes and a barber out of with Guvner a short time ago. I would have really liked to spend some time hunting this spot in an area that he and I hadn't hit yet...but that wasn't the objective of this trip. My objective was to hunt in the exact same area as before that I pounded with the pro coil...and retrace my steps to see if I could squeeze out anything that I missed with that coil.
This time I took niterider_58 who is more appropriately known as the Yeti....to see if we could pop some missed keepers out.
Well in 4 hours I squeezed out 2 mercs....a roosey...an injun...and 2 wheaties. More importantly...these came from the exact area as we had pounded before. In fact 3 of the finds came within 3 feet of plugs from the previous week. Funny little note about this fact is that Guvner was the only one to hunt in this particular area...so those plugs from before..had to be his.
The last hunt to round out my field test of the WOT was on one of my personal sites on very private property which I took Guvner to. This place has an unbelievable iron content...so it would be a challenge.
First I hunt by sifting through the iron crap to see what I can sniff out. I then go back and purposely dig all the stuff the SE is telling me is iron...to get it out of the way to hunt another layer of soil beneath it.
Anyway this last day of testing produced TWO coins that missed being seated by only one year...oh well.
The first thing I dug here was the 1892 Barber dime from directly underneath a big root.
I then popped out a few wheaties at the 8" level...but then got a super deep "warbler". It hit from just one way and the cursor just fluttered along the top...but never settled in the iron range.
Anyway...from 10" down and on edge popped the Washington quarter from an area of fill dirt.
I then moved and was hunting about 100 feet away from Guvner...or G...as I call him...because he had wandered over to the nasty iron section which I told him to stay out of. I was right in the middle of digging a plug when I heard this bellowing off in the distance. I glanced to my right...and there it was...from 100 freakin' feet away...that BIG STUPID GLOAT on G's face again
...AND he was holding up something shiny while shouting. That look instantly made my stomach churn.
Trust me...the look is not one that makes you want to congratulate him...It's one that makes you want to punch his lights out.
I'm sure he will have a post to let everyone know how he thinks he bested me this day.....jerk.
Anyway...I walked over his way...gave him a fake congratulations at best....then moved in on his turf.
I soon got an iron scream...but the WOT coil seemed to also be picking up a nice warble tone in with the iron scream. I decided to give it a shot...and was rewarded with an 1892S worn Barber quarter from 6" down and straight on edge. There was also a little chunk of iron sticking out of the side of the hole.
The WOT coil gave a nice "wraparound" effect on the silver signal and was able to see around the iron.....VERY nice.
About an hour later I popped out the nice sterling silver ring from 9"...and it too was mixed in with iron.
G then left so I spent the next 2 hours purposely digging every signal the SE told me was iron. I wanted to remove as much of it as I could...so the next time here I could hit another layer of coins beneath the crud.
I scanned a pic of the nearly 7 lbs of iron I dug in the 2 hours alone....just so you could see just how hard you have to work if you want to find good old coins. The picture you see of the all the iron is AFTER I emptied the pouch once. There is no secret...only hard work...knowing your machine...having a good coil...and knowing your site.
The amazing thing was that the WOT found us both all our goodies before I removed any iron.
What do I think about this coil?....DEEEEEEP! If there would have been any coins at the 12" level or beyond ...this coil would have let me know.
I expected it to be though after all the reading I did on it. I knew there had to be a reason this coil has been so popular with so many hunters for so many years now.
I was completely impressed with it's ability to pull coins out of the iron....the way it separated for a large coil....the pinpointing ability....the "wraparound" ability to pull stuff out of trash...the depth...the AWESOME stability..and the raw power each hunter can adjust his or her personal settings preferences for.
This coil has been around for many years now....and it isn't going anywhere. It's here to stay.
I'm NO "yes man" when it comes to testing coils. Why the heck would I want a coil on the end of my SE that didn't work the way I said it did...and didn't find stuff??
My time is very valuable to me...so I wouldn't waste it by using a coil that didn't work. I also would not recommend it to to my many friends I hunt with.
Ask anyone who has ever hunted with me and they will tell you. If I finally come out and say..."this coil's a GOOD one...go get it"...they KNOW it's a good one....'cause they see it on the end of my machine...NOT because I'm trying to sell a coil.
