You should dig your holes about 6 inches in diameter and deep enough to keep the plugs roots from being cut up. Only dig the plug on three sides and then fold it back. away from the hole. this leaves the roots intact on the uncut edge. This makes for a good recovery of the grass that you cut the hole. Done properly you will not notice the plug from the rest of the lawn. On very shallow digs such as 1 to 2 inches you may get by with a smaller hole. Don't dig any ones lawn during a draught or when the soil is very dry this will kill the plug..
