F70 VDI on Gold Rings

Gold rings can very a lot because of the different alloys 24k, 18k , 14k etc. If you have a gold ring to test , it may vary 1-2 different numbers, that is normal. If more , you may have a detector issue. I put a chart up showing different rings and where the ring in at.This applies to most all detectors.

I am only guessing , but the higher the karat should give a lower VDI because higher karat are purer Gold = less alloy.

My experience has been 18 & 22k ring up higher in the zinc penny range.

I hate to say this but size does matter, too !!!! Larger rings will ring up higher.
Here's a 22k size 12 wedding band. I thought I was digging a zinc penny & was in total shock when I saw this at the bottom of the scoop.

When Fisher was developing the CZ detectors they tested 255 gold rings and the following was found; 2% in copper, dime, quarter range 4% in zinc penny/screw cap range 49% in pull tab range 10% in nickel range 36% foil range 0% in iron range. If you google California treasure hunter Bill Watson's cardboard VDI chart you will find this to be about spot on. Notice how soft the ring numbers are in the nickel range. Only 3 in nickel range, where the masses are below and above the nickel range.
