F5 threshold

Never had a threshold like this. I always turned the threshold up and then back down to where I can barely hear it.
There is no smooth tone on this one. Garbled and broken up.
The only way I can get a steady tone is turn the threshold all the way up and turn down the headphone volume control.
If I don't use the headphones there is no way I can keep a low steady sound without breaking up
David

David,

I assume you are in all metal mode.

The threshold and gain controls work together. Set your threshold where you want it and then adjust the gain to where the threshold hum is steady. You may not be able to turn the gain up very high. I turn my gain up to about 30 or 35 with a nice steady threshold hum at +1 +2. If you want high gain settings in all metal you may have to run the threshold at 0 or slightly into the negative numbers.

No doesn't work with this one.
the threshold sounds like when your in a phone conversation and it starts to break up.
there is no smooth sound only if you turn the thresh way up.
I just bought this and I really like it but maybe I shoud email and see if it's still under warranty.
do you know who I can email or call.
thanks
david

The guy you bought it from started off on the wrong foot here so didn't get any help with the unit and may have not known it had problems. Or maybe he did and didn't fully disclose at the time of sale

Give Fisher a call and see what they can do.

Mike:
I pulled my F5 from Ebay 170374096565 and called fisher like you suggested.
First they said hold the pinpoint in and turn the detector on and look for a number in the lower left hand corner that comes on for a short time.
If the number is 61 it has old software if it's 62 it has the new software.
Mine says 61 also he thinks the problem is in the ground balance and has to be sent in.
Cost is $50 or 55 per hr. plus parts and shipping.
What can I do .
I can't stick anybody with it but when I get it back it should be like new.
I thought maybe some junk got in between the cover and the coil.
Tons of grit but it didn't solve the problem still wasn't sure if it was me not doing something right or the detector.
This means I will have a fisher for quite awhile because after spending to get it fixed I'm going to keep it.
David

Hey even though it has some problems this little F5 is teaching me something,
there might be a ground balance problem but I usually swin it about 1 or mabe a little more above the ground.
some times it will say junk but if you rub the ground lightly over where you had the beep the numbers go way up?
If you get a beep and it says nickel from right to left and iron from left to right I dig it

And you are giving us some information we didn't know.

I too, have version 61. I think most of the F5's out there are version 61. Now we can pester Fisher and ask what the difference is :spin:

Looking forward to how it works for you when you get back.

The F5 is on its way to texas.
Hope its not going to be to expensive but again I bought it at a decent price and if it comes back like new, then I don't care.
I still think it's a neat little devil for the price.
So much info etc etc.. I will let everybody know what the repairs are.
David

I have an F5 that I traded for and I can't get a smooth threshold at all. It will only get about Two inches depth. I was wondering how much Fisher charged you for repairs. Going to send it in before the weather gets cool enough for an old man to dig in Al.

Thanks

It sounds like you're saying the detector was that way when you traded for it. If so, you had an unethical trading partner to say the least.

If it was somebody here you traded with, please let us know on the feedback forum.

I hope you don't think I'm insulting your intelligence by saying this, I'm sure you probably did this already, but if not make sure you try new batteries.

My experience with the F5 is that before the batteries totally give out the detector loses most of it's performance and the unit only gets a couple inches depth.

Yes I traded on Findmall back in April with Robo. (rsarnacki@wyan.org ) At the same time that the trade was happening my wife got really sick and by the time she was back on her feet the weather had gotten hot. So I really didn't know something was wrong for about four months. I blame myself for not finding the problem before this, so I'll just eat it and learn. Besides Robo might not have known something was wrong, and he also might have known. I just don't know and it has been too long to complain. And I tried batteries.

Thanks
Bill

Bill - I figured you tried batteries, but I wanted to mention it just in case.

FT should get it squared away for you after they lighten your wallet a bit.:crylol:

Let us know how it turns out.

Some things in life are more important than detecting, I'm glad your wife is doing better.

Good news. Not only is my wife doing well but I decided to try batteries one more time. Got some with 2014 date and that appears to have fixed my F5. Ground is so dry that I can't be sure, but it is a big improvement. Thanks for suggesting batteries. I guess we should always try another new set before we send it in. I also tried fresh charged NI-MH and they didn't work. Seems like the world is doing good.

Thanks

Marfcomo.
When I got it I was impressed and didn't realize it had a problem.
Thats because I didn't have headphones at the time and when I bought killerbees I found that I could not get a threshold.
without headphones you would not know there was something wrong but you would never find anything deep.
With me I have to have that barely audible threshold for the deep stuff.
I think he probably knew---If he used headphones then there is a good possibility that he knew for sure.
Still I only paid $300.
Hey you take your chances buying used.
I bought it from TIMINKY but he said he didn't have a problem.

That's great news on both accounts!

David - From what I can remember, timinky didn't mention having any problems wtih the unit.

I remember he wasn't happy with the depth. Something about a Bounty Hunter being deeper.

He claimed he was used to finding really deep coins,up to 14" I think, with his DFX.

Anyone buying a F5 expecting to find 14" coins is asking to be disappointed.
