F44-Concentric or DD?

I recently purchased a Fisher F44 but did not spring for the DD coil. My question is; Which coil will find metal deeper or are they pretty much equal?

The bigger the coil, the deeper it will go, most DD coils are 11" and most standard coils are a little smaller than that so the DD coil may go slightly deeper.

Finding deeper metal? What kind of metal and how deep do you think you need to go?

Generally, to get better or deeper performance you should consider the detector first, as well as the serekh mode and settings, then consider a search coil.

Also, if coils are of a similar size and shape, the Concentric coil would have a slight 'edge' in better depth-of-detection.

The F44, and I had some, seemed to work better with a Concentric coil than it did with a Double-D coil, and I found it to be a reasonably good urban Coin Hunting unit.

Personally, I think both coil types have a place in ones arsenal. DD coils tend to do a little better in more highly mineralized ground and the more trash laden spots like parks and old fairgrounds, as they get better target separation. Like Monte, I have found concentric coils of equal size to DD seem to get a bit more depth. For moderate ground and less trashy spots concentric coils are good. HH jim tn

Thanks guys. I am mostly doing coin shooting with a minor amount of prospecting. I know that the F44 is not made for prospecting but I think it would do alright on larger nuggets.

A small coil would certainly help here. The smallest I know of is the 4 inch concentric made by fisher and quite affordable. Small DD coils are also exceptional for this but not as affordable. Good Luck

Actually, I have a small coil but unfortunatly it is for my F2 and won't work on the F44.

mdc002, when coils get too large they lose performance on smaller-size targets. Large coils were mainly designed for larger-size objects.

On the F44 I had good performance with the 5" DD coil but mainly used the 7" Concentric I kept mounted full time.

I run my f-44 with a NEL sharpshooter on it.. In my area the performance was so good with this coil on the minelab explorer that I purchased one for the f44. I ditched the big tear drop coil for this one and it has never disappointed me yet.

That's a wonderful deal! If I didn't have one already... I have an F2 4 inch coil also. It works kind of on my Omegas but only get about half an inch on a dime. LOL

mdc002, although I did give a response earlier, let me add this with regard to "Coin Shooting".
I liked the F44 for Coin Hunting.
I did my best all-around hunting with the 7" Concentric coil.
I didn't and do not care for the tear-drop or egg-shaped standard coil. I bought one with the 11" BiAxial and another with the 7" Concentric.
In trashier places I used the 5" DD.
I found a lot of coins, jewelry and other small interesting things. Typically most of them were surface to about 4". I did find some deeper in the 4+" to 8" depth range.

I wish you the best of success and remember that 'location' is often the best key for success, combined with hunting a site slowly and methodically to not miss good targets.
