Hello James, there is no 0 option on the Notch setting the lowest is 1.
Choosing this in disc mode would put the machine in the lower half of the first range = iron 1 to 7.
To by pass the notch setting completely you would choose a setting of 0 in disc mode which effectively switches it off.
My test have shown that 1 to 4 on disc are very similar but if you go to 5 or 6 in disc mode in a lot of cases it quietens the machine quite a bit.
That along with reduced sensitivity as the search site conditions dictate produces the best overall results.
To start with until the machine is better understood by the user a setting of 5 or 6 maybe the better starting point.
If in these slightly lower settings a area started to produce some good finds then the 0 setting would usually be tried along with some other setting combinations, all metal, motion all metal etc to give the maximum chance of finding everything that was there.
The 0 setting in disc mode with any sort of discrimination being effectively turned off poses me another question.
Is this set up the same operation and performance wise as motion all metal mode?
If you think about it this is what is really happening, 0 discrimination = all metals detected and the machine is in motion.
I have not asked the question yet or had time to test it myself but will do so first chance.
Very little time at the moment, first week back after being off with bad flue, my dads in hospital and quite rightly even when i felt a bit better they did not want me in the hospital coughing and sneezing everywhere and I'm away on holiday next week.
Take care, Mart.
