Explorer XS Audio Help Needed (LONG)

I could use some help with the audio setting on my Explorer XS. Since I got it over 2 months ago, I have been running it in Normal audio, and I'm having a heck of a time getting used to it. Let me add at this point that I used a Sovereign for 6 years prior, and never had a problem
What I'm noticing is that I can't seem to get good solid target responses with my Explorer. For example, on a clad dime about four inches down, I have to walk around the signal before I can get it to repeat to any degree. It is really difficult to sort out the good signals from the bad, and frankly I'm really going nuts with it. My hunting buddy also uses an Explorer XS and he swears by Audio 3, which I have tried. Audio 3 is just bizarre sounding, and I have found that to be the same with Audio 1 & Audio 2.
I've been detecting since 1972 and have used a variety of machines, and I used to think that I had a pretty good ear for tones & their subtle nuances. These Explorer tones have me baffled, and I find myself longing for the big sound that the Sovereign made on a good target.
Any suggestions?
By the way, my hunting buddy and I went to a park this evening and he used my machine for a good 45 minutes. He said that it worked fine, but that he couldn't stand Normal audio. He dug one target during that time, a 1943 Mercury. How do you like that!
Thanks for the input and help!
Bill

Bill,
I am no Expert with the Explorer but I notice this too on the deeper coins as the response is too quick compared to the Sovereign. What I have been doing on some of the worked out areas where i think there may be some deep ones is run in audio 1 as the tones will linger on more and easier to hear. The only disavantage is on the surface targets it make them sound too big. In most cases I run in normal.
The Sovereign is a hard detector to beat for us that have used them an understand them.
Good Luck,
Rick

Bill, you msy already be doing this, but make sure the coil flat to the ground and sweep the target with very steady small sweeps right over the target with a quick motion left and right.. good tsrgets should give you a very steady tone in normal audio.. better if in fast response also.. no more than a couple inch sweeps to each side of the target.. it should lock right on..shallow targets may require you to lift the coil off the ground but make sure the coil level to ground at all times...

Bill, you can make the Explorer sound very much like the sovereign by adjusting the "variability"
control and the "limits" control.Mostly adjust the "variability".
