Explorer SE or E-Trac?

Ted S

Well-known member
I currently have an Explorer SE with a Pro coil on it. It is a good machine and I know it goes deep on silver. My question here is the E-trac that much better? I just brought a used one home from a young fella who said to try it out as long as I want. That seemed like a cool deal. Of course I told him some good agate hunting and arrow head areas! He graduated with my daughter and we know the family well. This E-Trac also has a Sun Ray pinpointer on it. I do not have the owners manual but I do have the Andy Sabich book. Can I tell how old it is by serial number and what would be a fair price on it? Thanks everyone and happy hunting!! Ted

I found the Etrac was better for target ID..maybe not deeper..but better to operate.
Price is subjective... Check out the classifieds here, and see what their selling for.
That pinpoint device on it is worth a hefty price too. It's what your willing to pay within reason of course.
Condition... age...... and always a biggie for me..Screen scratches..or rather the lack of, plays a big role for me on any used detector.

Thank you Elton! I have a Whites TRX pinpointer. I have the battery on the charger and will fire it up in a while. I should be able to hunt tomorrow. It is supposed to be 60*.Any tips for a first time E-Trac user??:help:

I found goes4ever settings worked extremely well for my dirt. Their listed in the Etrac forum I do believe.

Now do understand..First time users should do the factory settings for awhile to get a feel for the machine.

I don't suppose you know if the guy who let you try it has changed a lot of settings ... a reset would take it back to how their shipped.

oops that wasn't the settings I was referring to on goesforsever.
I was talking about his actual run the MACHINE SETTINGS .SORRY.

I believe the pre E-Trac machines have a much better target ID. When Minelab set all the ferrous values to be equal to 12 they pretty much destroyed what made the Explorer series unique and powerful. There is a ton of information to gleaned from the old style of TID, on the newer machines you can only watch the conductive numbers move a few pixels left or right and make a decision based on that.

Ted,

The Etrac is a fine detector and you can't miss with the Sun Ray pinpointer on it. Those are hard to find these days and can be very expensive.

Ok...we can all like differences...

for me the etrac clicked... just an opinion on my part anyway.. he may hate it.

I just started it. Wow! This sure has a lot of features! I really don't know if I would like it. I will give it a chance. I have read that it won't go any deeper than my Explorer.

The X1 Sun Ray pinpointer will give you the same sounds as if the coil is in the hole. Therefore, you will know if you are on the silver targets ! The combination of the two are hard to beat. Good Luck !!!

I go by sound on my Explorer. When I look at the screen I use smart find. Can't see the screen most of the time due to the sun.

I like both machines plenty, yes the E Trac ID's better but I like the Explorers pinpointing to me is better, I just cant explain it. Pinpointing is real important to me cause I like to know how deep the target is. Im happy to use both sometimes I use one and then I use the other over places the targets sound different to each machine and I pick up things I missed from the other machine. You cant go wrong with either. Having said that I would never consider selling my Explorer. I possibly could the E Trac because they are similar at depths.

Let us know how you fare.

Plus how many times has Minelab upgraded the Explorer? The XS, Explorer II?, with the E trac it has never been upgraded. That's another reason I like my Explorer and would never part with it.

Thanks! Does anyone have a quick link to a program for coins? I see a few but want one that is easy. I have no instruction manual or cd that was supposed to be with the detector.

I have had the Explorer XS since it first came out and still absolutely love it. I've had it repaired a couple of times so it is still in like new condition internal-wise.
I've had the SE and SE Pro. When I went to the SE my finds went down hill. When I got the SE Pro my finds were still tanking. When I got the E-trac my finds
came back. Now it is possible my SE and SE Pro had issues unbeknownst to me. But I sold them and got the E-trac and love the E-trac.

Thanks Tony! I played with it for a while. Found some settings on you tube. I presume this is like my Explorer and the same settings will come back on when I turn the machine on? Also trying to figure out the discrimination level...

Download the manual and the cd software from the Mineland Website. Goes4ever has a wealth of tips and settings for the Etrac on his website. Settings from Andy S have worked well for me. If I can figure out how to change the settings on my Etrac, anyone can do it. Have some fun with it.

Thanks! I did download the manual and am going out for a couple of hours today. The cool thing to try is that Sun Ray probe!

I owned an SE Pro for several years and recently upgraded to the E-Trac. I think I made a great move. I loved my Explorer, but I find the E-Trac gives me more info because of the greater disparity of numbers available. I have taken the E-Trac to places my Explorer went and I have found things missed too. Either machine is top notch though.

Pastor bob...I made it out for a while today. The field I hunted was corn last year and hard walking. I then went to an elementary school and popped a couple of memorial cents along the sidewalk at around 4 inches. That Sun Ray probe is the cats meow!! I moved into the school yard and the machine started making all sorts of noise. I noticed only one bar for the battery pack. I don't know if that caused it. I do know it deserves a second chance!
