I am so new to this i am at the stage of not even knowing if i am buying the right machine. I found one in my local bargain news. its listed as an excalibur mini lab explorer (yes, it says mini lab) but, says its excelant cond. but needs battery, can I use this machine on land also. i can not find anyone on the chat rooms to answer me. I will join this group as soon as i have my machine. Can anyone please help me, as there is no-one I know schooled about metal detectors.??? Please someone help me he says he paid $1350.00 for it and is asking $350.00 for it and it needs a battery. how much does a battery cost and how do i know if he is not selling me a junky model.???

An excalibur and explorer are two different detectors. If he paid $1350 I'm sure he would know exactly what he spent that much money on. Using both names for his product is simply to attract attention and to mislead. I would ask many more questions and have a good idea what a Minelab detector looks like before I drop a nickel to that guy.

Hey Greg,
I did a search on the internet for "excalibur mini lab explorer" and did not find anything. I went to www.minelab.com and did not find anything like that. I only found excalibur 500 and 1000.
This particular forum involves Minelab Explorer XS and XS2 users. So maybe we don't know what machine you are talking about. I know I don't.
For battery prices, you can go to www.minelab.com and look up batteries.

I have seen this done to attract buyers in the past by calling a Minelab Sovereign an XS to attract attention. But the asking price can be the give away. <img src="/metal/html/cry.gif" border=0 width=40 height=15 alt=":cry"> Jerry.

Hi Greg! The Excaliber is a machine that is totaly waterproof and is designed for use in the surf where a conventional detector will fail' It is based on the Minelab Sovreign which is a great detector but has no screen and only 17 multiple frequencies compared to the Explorers 28.
Here in the UK I have seen quite a few used to search inland but mainly by those who do an awful lot of beach detecting.
It is however NOT an Explorer.

I would be suaspect of the battery thing... since both can use AA packs, and if he paid that much he should have them.. So it may just be the machine is broken period.. If its an explorer 350 bucks might be worth it even if broke depending whats wrong.. if an excalibur I dont know.. anyway AA's can be picked up at the store.. take 8 of them down there and ask to try it before buying.. also be aware. a Chinese out fit makes a chicy detector they call an explorer as well

My bet is "mini lab" is just a corruption of the name Minelab.
