Excalibur II Settings

Great advice there. Oh yeah, "1", meaning none...no "zero"...10-4.

Mike,
I checked out your profile. I saw you night hunt. I was thinking about doing that on the lakes i know well. I mostly hunt alone and it sure steams me to drive 45mins and get beat to spots.
Any suggstions or words of wisdome before i venture into the dark neck deep in water? Any recomindations on gear? Any cautions?
Any advise would be welcome.

Thanks
Crenman

Thanks for the advice, I like to hear everyone's opinions and settings so I can try them all to see what works for me. From what most everyone tells me Pinpoint is the most popular then switch to Disc.to check your target. Doesn't seem like many hunt in auto mode unless they are hunting a very trashy beach.

Got an Excalibur II 1000 shipped to me today, ordered the 48" handled scoop from Travis Nuttall last week. I should be armed pretty well for my vacation trip this year, I'll have my E-Trac, and the Excalibur so hopfully I can top last years finds.

Thanks everyone for your tips and advice, it is well taken.

When you hit multiple targets kind of close together pay real close attention to how that particular area is laid out and look for similar environments that will save you a lot of wasted time. Theres a reason targets are confined to certain areas. Good Luck. HH :minelab:

I never hunt in Auto but also NEVER hunt in pinpoint. I've never understood that myself, why some folks do that. I know a bunch of Excal users and none that I know do that. In fact, I don't even use the pinpoint switch at all...it's probably frozen in place...I wouldn't know. The reason? The tone system is the BEST thing about the Excal. In pinpoint, EVERYTHING sounds the same. And switching back and forth seems to me would be a major pain n the butt. Once one learns the tones you can pretty much call your targets from them before you dig. As for the actual process of pinpointing, it's SO easy to do without putting it in pinpoint mode, it's a no-brainer. Just my opinion, but I've been using one for years and have been very successful with it. Once you get yours you will see what works for you. No matter what, you can't go wrong with an Excal. I think we all agree on THAT. :)

Thanks Hershey, All ready aware of that been down that road several times. I start perpendicular to the water and work to low tide until I find the coin line then turn parallel with the water and work that following the water down. Seems to work for me most the heavy stuff seems to hang out along the same line parallel to the water.

Well I wish I could help with that, but I strictly hunt the Virginia Beach resort strip (ocean beach) and hunt the wet sand at low tide during the night, 2 hours prior to low tide until 2 hours after...in the wet sand, by the water's edge, and in the shallow water. I've been to my waist or chest a number of times but always seem to do better in the wet sand and shallow water. Gulfhunter is the guy you want to hear from. I'm sending him a link to your post...I'm sure he will give you some tips.

Hello Crenman,
I have hunted some lakes, but in the daylight. Thing about lakes is, the obstructions on the bottom and unlevel ground make them a bit challenging to negotiate, even in broad daylight. Gators could be somewhat of an issue too. I am pretty adventurous, but I'm not TOO sure I would try a lake at night, UNLESS you were in a designated swim area which may be ok, but cha better watch over your shoulder. Gators may like that light of yours too, LOL! You just need the submersible headlight in addition to the rest of your gear. I use the Princeton Tec Vortec Headlamp. http://www.scuba.com/shop/display.asp_id_026122

Now, in the defense of night hunting, no kids, minimal to no interviews, no distractions, it is cool, and it is peaceful. Plus the fact, you are not advertising the fact that people should be worried about losing anything. I love the night shift, but I think I'll take my chances with the sharks in the brine, as opposed to the sweet water, savvy? Best of luck to ya mate!

I have spoken with Andy Sabisch about hunting in Pinpoint he does not nor does anyone he hunts with use this method, but settings do vary of course considering which beach you are on.

My thing is why would you want to waste time on switching back and forth form Pinpoint to Disc. when the machine automatically nulls on iron. Some say it will definitely hit deeper targets hunting in Pinpoint that disc. will not touch. Most machines in my experience work better with a little discrimination, so if your hunting in Pinpoint which is letting ferrous and conductive targets come thru your basically maxing out the machine, plus all that switching back in forth is wear and tear on your knob.

In my opinion which doesn't really count since I have never used one is; you would think a good stable manual setting would give you relatively the best results.

bcoop: It depends where you are. Now my machine works fine in disc around Daytona down to New Smyrna on the atlantic side but on the gulf side from Sarasota up to Indian Rock PP works a LOT better Clearwater does'nt make much difference, Myrtle Beach area I've hunted behind other hunters using disc and find stuff they never hear. It depends on the sand and minerals I assume. Check out Beechnut's, Gene Edwards and Gravedigger Max's finds. These guy's log hours of hunting time and post some great finds. Whatever you prefer is what works period. Have fun and Good Luck. HH :minelab:

Both the excaliburs i have had are deeper in PP(all metal) than in disc mode, being the same as the sovereign one would think the same applies but my XS2aPro there is very little difference my Elite was the same, so this leads me to think that its machine and locality related, my Elite was also deeper than a GT that i put it up against and probably my Xs too although i never had them together, take 3 identical machines and one will outshine the others, same as cars off a production line, one always seems to be faster for some reason.
