I got my new ex 11 today. I took it outside to try out a few items, pull tabs, coins, gold ring and all of them had the same tone so i guess i have lots to learn or is that normal ? i think adjustments have to be made i was testing on the lawn at home the unit was nice and quiet otherwise, no interference at all from the environment. I will test it at the beach once it's charged fully.

Cheers Maureen..

You should notice quite a difference in tone between coins, silver, jewelry/gold and pull tabs. There will even be a little difference in tone between 10k and 14k gold especially in the size and thickness of the item.

Each target will produce a different pitch, your silver items should produce a higher smooth pitch compared to the med/low pitch that gold produces.

If your machine is in Pinpoint ALL SOUNDS will be the same, this is ALL METAL and the same response will sound on ferrous and non-ferrous items.

Here are the settings that seem to be the general consensus

Discrimination @ 1
Sensitivity @ 6
Volume 3/4 to max If your Threshold is just audible Max volume is very tolerable
Threshold @ just audible
Disc. mode

As you may know by reading POSTS or your Excalibur Manual. The Pinpoint mode is ALL METAL and will generate the same response on all metals. In Discrimination mode the machine will Null on iron targets.

Some folks hunt in Pinpoint/All metal because they feel it detects deeper. In this case you can switch to Disc. mode and check the target for a good signal or iron null on targets detected. If you don't get a signal in Disc. mode you may have to pull a scoop of sand out and recheck the hole in Disc. mode to receive a signal.

Congrads on the New Machine, Just take your time..It will come in time and you will see the excal is one of the best all around machines for beach detecting...wet sand to the deep.....Joe

I used to be the same way until I started paying close attention. Coins have a more higher tone than tabs and gold rings. Coins have more of a ping at the end of the tone while gold has a mellower mid to lower tone. Try it again and you will soon hear the difference. The Excal II is an excellent machine and will find the gold. Good luck. John

Maureen, get Toni Diana's "basic Ear training for Excalibur" it will pay for itself many many times over. Then get Clives book on "Find Gold in the Water with the Excalibur" and his "Advanced Field Methods" and you will be ready for anything that comes along.
Maureen, when I first got my machine, I did what you did and just about fainted. The sounds were all the same and I spent x amount of $, what did I do, Let me tell you I would not trade my Excalibur for any other water machine.
I am up to 56 rings, not all gold, a good many Silver and a # of junkers. My goal is 100 rings this winter while in Mexico and I believe I will come close.
GOOD LUCK

Gerry

Thanks for the help guys much appreciated.I just tried it out once and should have waited a while before going straight for it, but a new toy has to be played with I'm sure you all agree.I have been too busy so i haven't had a chance to take it out properly but hopefully the week end will take me out.

Cheers Maureen. H.H.

Here is a video I did with my new Excalibur II. If you guys can tell me how to make the sounds more different I'm all ears. Thanks.

Nice video and I know what you mean,it take a lot of practice with the headsets that comes with the excal ll. A lot of tones sounds the same. The be best thing is to change the headphones (when your warrenty runs out). I run the original (orange) headphones from the first generation excal. I love um . Every tone is crisp and you can tell the differance in the tones. mano HH
