Equinox owners?

Well-known member
Not much discussion here lately from Equinox owners..I am curious as to everyone's silver count so far this year! I was out a couple of days ago and walked 2 hours in corn stubble and found just on coin that happened to be an 1898 Barber dime! I think I am over 30 silver coins for the year and may have a day or two left to hunt. I think my 900 is doing well. so I can't justify the extra coin for the Manticore for maybe another 3/4" of depth..

I’ve never touched a 900 but I know there’s much more to the M than a bit more depth. Regardless of the model and make, as long as a detector is bringing enjoyment that is the most important thing. For me the M is great and not at all because I was looking for more depth. Buy once cry once. Unfortunately the M wasn’t my first ‘buy’.

You are way ahead of me Ted.
I have only found 4 silver coins this year, but one was a Spanish 1 Reale, which I was shocked to see.
Most of the silver I find is in early Spring and later Fall while it is cool… fortunately most of the time I can continue during winter months too here in Virginia.
You have had a great year with 30 silver coins!!!
Well done!!👍

Ted, you had a great year! Especially in that field where silver was jumping out of the ground.

Hey Ted, I found 32 silver coins this year with my equinox 900. I’m not convinced the manticore has that much more depth, if any, over the 900.

Thanks guys! I just didn't get out today as it's a bit cool. Yeah...Pulling 17 silver coins out of one field was amazing! I hope to go out a couple of times but it's not looking good!

Ted, 30 silver is quite a respectable total. And you still may be able to add a few more. Congrats and well done. Me, this is my worst year ever for silver with only 11 FTY. Being mainly a park and yard hunter extremely dry ground and some health issues really curtailed the times I was able to get out.. Its still really dry here. As far as the Equinox goes. I love the 800 and had my best year end totals with it. One year I managed to hit 104 not counting the sterling. The 900 I used for a year and to me, with lackluster results. Had a recent resurgence with it after the update but still would rather use the Legend. Strongly considering a Manticore while they are on sale. If I do get one I hope I can sell the 900 and recoup some of the cost. I'm one of those guys that will never see ROI on the money I've spent. I do it for fun and love of history. Good luck . Mark

The Manticore lets you hunt IN the iron!

Example: I am hunting next the concrete wall with rebar in it. the coins jump out of the underlying iron tone and also show up on the 2D. I pulled 20 coins and a silver wedding band from a beach that I hunted out all along the wall. Iron no longer masks the goodies.

I'm looking at getting back into the field I found my gold coin that is literally littered with bomb shrapnel (I pulled over 10 nose fuse cones out of the field. each was part of a 500 pound bomb). Throw some nails on the ground and then put coins among them. Turn up the recovery speed, and see the magic happen!

I have been running a 900 for over a year now ( from an etrac, which I still like) and yes I like the light weight, new technology and faster response but these memorial pennies coming in between 75 & 85 are driving me crazy are any of you guys experiencing this ?
With the etrac I could walk away from a 12-43 feeling confidence that it was a memorial even though I have found worn silver at that reading but this 900 is all over the place.
I have done the update and noise cancel every time I turn it on .
And, is the Manticore any better at distinguishing the difference with either tone or numbers ?

In Feb. of 18 when they first came out I got an Equinox 800. Coming from an Etrac one of the first things I noticed was its inability to distinguish a penny from a dime. I was used to spot on ID from the Etrac. It took a little getting used to. Got the 900 in Dec. 22 and thought maybe with its expanded ID range that would help. Silly me, it just seemed to exaggerate the issue. Luckily for me in my soil the silver almost always will ring in high and stay within 3 numbers. The 800 silver dimes rang the high 30s, the 900 high 90s and now the Legend in the 50s. And a deep memorial or wheat will also do the same. I will say the ID and stability is a little better on the Legend than the 900. It seems penny-dime ID run too close together on all of the SMF machines. I just chalk it up to one of the characteristics of SMF technology. Although I've never owned a D ll, from what I've seen its no better than any others separating th penny-dime ID.
One tell-tale that I used on both Equinox's was when it was up averaging I would massage the signal until the numbers dropped down, if it was a penny to their respective air test numbers. Just my thoughts.
One more thing, I sure miss that silver warble from the Etrac. When you got it--ya just knew. Good luck. Mark

From my experience with the 900 if you aren't digging zinc cents once in a while you may be missing out on some Indian head cents. I have dug a few Indians in parks that weren't more than 4" deep probably due to another person thinking they were passing by a zinc cent. I'm old but I don't like leaving targets behind... :detecting:

Yeah the etrac has the unmistakable silver tone!
