Drove over an hour today to get to my detecting spot. Got the detector out, and as I was opening the headphones to put them on, the Koss TD81 broke. And I mean broke so you can't fix them. One of the hearing cups was hanging down 6" on the cord, so I figured I'd just cut that one off. Pulled out the old clip knife, and voila... well duh... that was the ear phone that was attached to the cable wire! Not wanting to walk around holding the one earphone to my ear with my left hand, I decided to run back into town 8 miles and get another pair.
I stopped at a Radio Shack that sells Whites detectors. They had 2 headphones, the cheap $29 pair ~ no thanks, and a black pair of Koss/Whites that I hadn't seen before. These things were HUGE, looked like 2 frisbees on a U bolt. They would have covered Dumbo's ears. OK, I don't consider a set of headphones the epitome of dress anyway; I like to keep them small, but efficient. Do you remember that picture of Elson that DC posted? Elson had his 1950 era headphones on, they looked like 2 satellite dishes with individual antenna on each one.
Anyway, the Koss has a lifetime warranty. I didn't think of that when I cut the wire. I've had 2 pair of Koss TD81's, in 13 years. The last pair that broke, Koss replaced free of charge, I'm hoping they'll do the same with these. I have a backup of everything except a pair of headphones.
