I am very satisfied with my etrac. It's not the heaviest nor the lightest when it comes to detectors. It does very well with coin if one is patient. As far as your situation and what you intend to spend to successfully detect here's my take. Get a used etrac or even consider a used se pro. The stock coils 11" are good but I think you'll need a smaller coil when hunting in trashier sites say a 6x8 sef or a 5 inch sunray. If it were me I would buy a used etrac and be on the lookout for a cheap used fisher f75se that has both the 11" and 5" coils. Doing this will give you the best of all 3 worlds: jewelry/coin/relics. I realize this is the etrac portion of the site but the Fischer f75se is no slouch especially when it comes to trash. I know this because I have hunted sites with it my etrac has been over with 10x12 sef coil, procoil, 6x8 sef and sunray 5" coils attached and the f75 with the 5 inch coil is superb in trash. The fisher is only 3.5 pounds with the 11" coil and batteries installed. It is the most ergonomically superior detector made IMO. As far as a nonrecommendation goes, I have a white's v3i. I would stay away from that one. I'm no engineer although my teachers highly encouraged me to purse that career but I think white's missed the boat with the v3i. I strongly think they got their frequencies wrong with designing it. I feel wherever a v3i has been there's a good chance silver dimes are left behind. I have been looking at the different detecting forums know for the past 2 years and have drawn some conclusions based on my readings and experience with the v3i, 2-etracs, and a f75se. The etrac is superior on dime sized silver in low to moderate mineralized soil. The f75se is superior in neutral to low mineralized soil when looking for relics. I realize minelab has the new ctx3030 and I haven't the pleasure of using on yet and probably never will. I'm keeping my eyes on what fisher releases. If it's a cross between performance of a cz3d and f75se and handles EMI well and is waterproof not necessarily submersible and possesses the same ergonomics as the current production f75se I will get one. I hope this information is helpful in making your decision.
If you plan on owning a smaller coil (please do) the extra lower rod for mounting the small coil makes for quick change outs. I own one for my 6x8"SE and my 5.5" Sun Ray. This machine is fantastic at pulling coins out of the trash.
I am 66 years old and the E-Trac can be a little tough on my back so I some times have to shorten my hunts but I wouldn't give up my E-Trac for anything. It's the best silver and all around coin machine I've ever owned and I've hunted with dozens of machines over the last 44 years. I can't say enough good things about it.
Lot's of people selling their E-Tracs to get the money to buy the new CTX 3030 and I'm seeing a lot of good selling prices out there, some include the smaller loops as well. Best of luck. Rick IL
I like mine alot also. A little on the heavy side but its also robustly made, you can feel the quality when your holding it.
Something the Etrac doesnt get alot of credit for is small gold but I find it does very well there.
Really simple to set up also, the menu is very straightforward and right at your fingertips, while hunting adjustments can be made over targets easily so you can really see what does what and how it changes what the detector does.
This is some very helpful information. It sure seems like everyone is in love with their etrac. Most of our soils here in Wisconsin are rock-hard due to excessive heat and drought. I have not even fired up my old machine for about a month. I have a hot lead on an untouched site on private property and hope for some rain soon.
I have learned a great deal since my posting. I will take the advice from several and start looking for a used etrac, hopefully with a few additional coils.
Glad to see that you are pulling the trigger and getting an E-Trac. The stock Pro coil is a very good coil, therefore, if you are thinking about getting additional coils, I would start with a small coil for trashy conditions. The SunRay X5, 8 x 6 SEF, EQ2 Pro, are some that you may want to consider.
