Ha..Ha.. Got Ya..!
I hunted the grass medium between the sidewalk and the street in an old part of town for about 3 hours. I still had a good time but nothing exciting. The weird looking pop top lid says 1930 patent pending so at least I got something that's 97 years old.

I was thinking it looked more like the air dampener on some type of gas burner ,, air regulator to help adjust the flame on a grill or something similar .

But yours is a good guess as well.
