Don’t throw away your old detector!

A lot of hype going around about a couple of new machines, that will “obsolete” all other detectors. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of bigger/better, faster/deeper. We start looking at our current machines and wonder what they’re missing and what the newer/greater machines could be finding. For the record, I’m as vulnerable to those thoughts as the next guy. I have two of the latest and greatest on order.
I still have a Garrett AT-Gold, that I bought last year. It’s a very capable machine, not only as a gold finder, but a coin machine, also. My granddaughter has a birthday this weekend, so we traveled to the small town she lives in, in Southern Utah. Since the weather is cooler, I thought i’d try detecting a vacant lot I hit about a year ago, using my E-Trac. Back then, I found a no-date Standing Liberty quarter and a handful of wheaties and zink’ers.
Well, today, my efforts were rewarded with two silver dimes, an aluminum Utah tax token, three wheaties, a couple of Nickles, a bunch of zink’ers, and various pieces of junk. Since my initial foray at this site, i’ve been back three more times, before today, and found a few more wheaties and Zinks. (Again, using the E-Trac). I was blown away with how well the AT-Gold performed. I was digging coins as deep as 8-9”. Both the silver coins were found next to rusted nails. I was getting a high coin sound, mixed with the iron reject; glad I didn’t ’t take “no” for an answer. This is a site where an old house sat and has lots of junk. I was using the “stock” AT-Gold coil and it was just the right thing for this site.
(I tried uploading pics, but my iPad just doesn’t want to do it.)

I marvel at the hype- and I rue the fact that I fell into the technology trap for many years. I estimate at least 50-60 detectors with the only bright spots being the ones I won. Then there's the documented story of the most valuable find of all times (known) found with a Radio Shack detector. And my deepest coin EVER found with an AH Pro set at PULLTAB discrimination! For those too young to remember, the AH Pro was the first TRUE pulltab discriminator that would find coins next to tabs-an off resonance discriminator. Drawback? With tuner set just right (remember TR style detectors?) you could hit a quarter at 5" air test! Well, I was finding loads of coins at a fair grounds when I came across one of those soft signals. Problem? It was a little wide for a deep target and I wasn't sure but felt it was a deep can. I plunged my 6" blade on my knife and sure enough -nothing. Still, it wasn't THAT wide a signal, so I dug the plug and plunged ANOTHER 6" to hear a "clack" sound. At a measured 12", was an 1800's silver dollar- with a gash in it from my knife.:surrender:

Oldie but goodies still rock. My 1985 Tesoro Golden Sabre- complete rebuilt/new coils/etc all free-still does a mighty fine job and love that notch disc-John

And......sometimes switching coils, is like using a totally different machine, at a fraction of the price.

Decisions, decisions, decisions!

I find these post amazing new machines comes out and guys start screaming hype... and start raving about what they found with a radio shack or some old brand detector... I found my first silver coin with a ace 250 when I started ... does that make the ace 250 a GREAT machine... I will say this the Nox has obsoleted the AT SERIES... I know John you don't want to hear that.... buy a nox and run it against the gold ,max and pro and it will not take you long to figure it out. I agree there is a lot of hype out on detectors that come out, MX SPORT , AT MAX, AND RACER 2 come to mind when I think about it. A lot of people think I'm bias toward the Deus in my test videos but not one ever showed what I showed in those comparision videos was false because it was true. I think some guys have the mentality of GO WITH WHAT YOU KNOW well I can see why . Its takes a lot of effort to learn a new machine and some have a lot of tweaks and not everybody into that kinda thing.... You guys can quote this and come back to it in a year and we will see how true it rings.. The NOX obsoleted the AT SERIES . I will also add for us guys who have been experimenting with multi freq machines there is a big advantage to having one that can change freqs... Small gold hoop OPEN earring in my garden at 7 1/2 inchs two machines will hit it Deus and NOX. AT SERIES all of them will not make a peep on it,CTX, ETRAC, F75, T2, cant touch it. You guys know I do videos and your welcome to come by and run your favorite machine in my garden and we can compare them and get this hype thing figured out..... If I was a coin shooter would I want a machine that MIGHT hit a 9 inch silver dime in the right conditions if all the stars were lined up just right or a machine that blast a 10 inch dime and might hit one at a foot in just the right conditions ...... its no brainer for me... ACTUALLY when I think about hype the AT SERIES imo is the most hype detectors out there.. I have tested them against others and there performance is average at best... against F75, T2, and others. oh yeah its waterproof.

And, for the record, I found MY first silver coin (a 1943 Walking Liberty half) with a Jetco BFO detector...in 1973 on George AFB, CA.

I can't help but laugh at the hype of this detector that's going to make all others obsolete.....seems like I heard that before.
calabash digger, have you tried a Deep Tech Vista Gold on the 7 1/2" earring ? I believe the Vista gold would hit it and probably hit it at deeper depths also.
It's easily the deepest detector I have ever used. Sure would like to see the Vista have a go at the earring if you have one to test, 25 khz or 30 khz models.....doen't matter......Thanks !

Roger

don't have a vista started to buy one and didn't I think it was because it was just a 2 tone machine. Whats a vista cost 600.00 bucks? I might have come off a little to strong in my first post so please accept my apology about that... My point is multi freq machines do have a advantage over single freq machines I would NEVER buy a machine that couldn't change freqs now after using one that can. Machines that can change freqs have obsoleted all single freq machines and its not just the NOX , there were multi freq machines before it. In a few years all machine will be multi freq I bet at least all mid range .IMO. Yes there is hype around releases but sometimes there is some truth to the hype... unlike some other recent releases I can think of. Vista gold might hit the earring but if remember correctly it was around 600.00 bucks... its a one trick pony 25 kh and that's it.. Why not just buy a equinox 600 ? water proof, multi freq, rechargeable. adjustable tones etc............

I just went and double checked. My ATPro still works. I guess it didn’t get the memo that it’s obsolete now.

...............Should be a little more considerate of others choices, Likes, and dislikes.
Not everyone likes the same machines. Not everyone gets the same results.. Yet over all, "some very good finds", are found with every machine.
Perhaps it's user ability....... diligence in the hunting habits.. and the area of soil each machine is being used in.

It's a matter of choice too. Not everyone likes the same things. So rather than put down, get in heated debates of which is or isn't better ..let's all be respectful of individual choice.
None of us can, or should try to force others to like what we like. Everyone is entitled to their opinions.
Opinions are just that .OPINIONS....Please keep it civil and not so forceful with your opinions...:)

Heck, yeah! I'm so thankful to have a detector in the greatest country in the world to not only get me into the great outdoors with enjoyable exercise, but also return my investment while doing it!

Well there is Flo with her trusted .. "AT Pro" .. That .. "GIRL" .. finds stuff you will not believe. SHE is tuned to that detector ,,

If you do not know what the detector is telling you Does not have to be the most expensive do-dad out there .. with all the bells and whistle to find "TARGETS" .. Most of what are found are only couple inches down .. We do not need a Detector to find stuff in CHINA

The White's DFX is a awesome machine .. BUT .. By the time it loads and set your programs ..Flo has found lots of things

Spoken by someone who has been in the hobby for a long time! Too many people lacking experience in this hobby are missing out on the greatest reasons for getting into it! If you like your detector, go knock yourself out and show us your finds, not the finds you could find! There is no "best" detector out there. And there never will be!

Great finds are made with cheap detectors, and cheap finds are being made with great detectors.

My apologies guys I'm a little strong minded sometimes....

The most under appreciated factor in making good finds is location.
The most over emphasized factor is experience.

I personally know some "Senior" hunters in VA that still use the Nautilus 2B they bought brand new years ago, Relics hunters they are and The 2B is today and has been they're prime machine. The same one they bought new 25+ years back.

They will tell you that it takes quite a while to learn what the machine is saying under a diverse set of conditions, particularly in tough soil and mineralized dirt. Their finds both support and justify they're convictions that it's better to understand the one you have that's performing and producing than to spend valuable time as a member of the support network that manufacturers depend on to try their latest and greatest game changing snooperstar detector.

I know that what they say is true even as I look at the 5 or so detectors sitting in my closet because....well, I'm like the rest of us I guess.

I had the best year detecting last year with my ATPro in almost 30 years. I went over places that I had beaten to death with various Tesoro machines and found a lot of great targets. Yet I don't feel the need to belittle those who still love their Tesoros. In those 10 years of swinging Tesoros I had a lot of fun. And I had a lot of fun with the ATPro last year, and plan to enjoy my new ATMax this year. For me, that's what it's all about. Personally I can't stand the audio of the Deus when I watch those videos. It sounds like someone stepping on a duck. I know I wouldn't enjoy that. So I'm going to keep swinging what brings me joy, and I'll find what I find. And I will continue to respect what others swing.

LOL. I know what you mean. I keep trying new machines, and every time I end up going back to my trusty MXT Pro.
