Do High End Headphones Add Depth???

metaltectinria

New member
All BS aside, Do the high end headphones (grey ghost, killer b's, etc) actually make a deep weak signal heard with regular headphones sound like a good, not so deep, signal? Can you actually hear a deeper signal with the high end phones that you cant hear with less expensive phones? If so, what kind do you use and why would you recommend them?

I got a set of Killer Bs about a week ago. I already don't want to be without them. I can hear so clearly I can tell the difference between deep signals and detector noise. I can hear the slightest variation in intensity of tone. I can tell the variations in sound that was there before but I couldn't hear it. Two days ago I heard two responses at one time. One was a small long iron low conductive tone(nail) and the other was a smooth high tone (round high conductive metal). Note that the ability of my Euro Sabre to see through a degree of masking gave me the opportunity to hear it but the headphones gave me the ability to hear it.

The round stud in the lower right corner of the photo was 2" or 3" below the rusted piece of nail that is just above it in the photo.

That would not have been possible without a good set of headphones. That's not an impressive find but it is an impressive feat.

You want know until you try them.

I got the basic Killer Bs. They cost $72 , no tax and no shipping. I paid that much for a cheep no good set of wireless headphones at Radio Shack.

Take my word for it. That's well worth the trouble.

i have a whites DFX, Iused it for a long time with out the headphones. I tried them today big change, i will never hunt with out them agine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:yikes::

OOps, I see you didn't say you had Whites headphones. Sorry about that.

I'm not familiar with Whites DFX headphones. I think all White's headphones are sub-standard for most metal detectors. The E-Series 9000 White's/Koss Headphones is the best set offered by Whites. Their isn't any specifications available for those. I have my doubts that they are really designed specifically for the metal detectorist.

If you really want to hear what's going on I suggest you get a quality set of Killer Bs, Sun Ray, Temberwolf, Gray Ghost or one of the others that can deliver.

Don't mean to put any one down but it really makes a difference,

I have used Calrads.....ML originals that came with explorer......Vanco....then I bought GrayGhosts.....and now the seperation of all the diff. tones the Explorer puts out can be distinquished from one another....I would feel handycapped without them.....I also bought Sunrays Pro Gold and not very impressed...but will be a good backup pair if the Grays go on the blink.....someday I will try Timberwolf,Killer B's,Rat Phones....etc....just to find the perfect set for my ears.....so far the Grays win!....I laugh to myself when I try the older ones on cause of the muffled sounds I hear and then slap the grays on and hear the tones much clearer. Head phones makes the machine,,,,,My opinoin

Ever sense I started back metal detecting, five months ago, I have tried to search a park close to my house. I found a silver ring by the tennis courts with a BH QD II the first time I went there. Sense then I have had mixed results. I tried to search in the playground but it has wood chips that have chewed up aluminum of all types, thicknesses, sizes and just about every way you can imagine.

I've tried to search that playground with four different MDs and it has defeated me every time. The best I could do was to turn the desc up to cancel out aluminum. I only found a few coins that way.

This morning I decided I was going to try my new Killer Bs with my Euro Sabre and see what happens. I started out as before, just finding these little pieces of aluminum and noticing the distinctive sound they were making. I was determined to keep my discriminator all the way down. The all metal mode was useless in this sea of aluminum. I found a couple of bobby pins. These have an intriguing sound and I can't pass them up. Then I heard a unmistakable round object. It was a button. Nothing special, but it gave me confidence. Then I got a coin. Euro jumped on it!.... I then new that I could easily find round high conductive objects in this aluminum mess. Then I found a couple of ball barrings, bingo. I was even able to hear more than one response at once. I could hear an aluminum response at the same time hearing a target with a different conductive response. Now I had low conductive targets.( A must if you want to find gold jewekery. ) I'm getting to the point I can use my Killer Bs to wade through this trashy mess and keep my desc all way down and just keep on cooking.

I got a hard hitting signal and bingo again, only this time it was a woman's silver ring.:)

The ring has been resized and any markings are gone . The resizing doesn't look like silver, it looks like silver solder. You can see it in the photo.

Here is a sample of the trash infesting the wood chips.

I had to go home and be with the family:cheekkiss:.........That's nice too:blush:

I've been afraid of that playground for five months, but not any more:wiggle:

Tabdog,

You have pretty much answered my questions posted to you on the Tesoro forum.

They don't really "add" depth, but they do enable the user to more likely hear the weak or whisper signals at depth. INMHO, headphones are the most important accessory to the detector, so just as well buy good ones the first time. I ALWAYS use headphones, feel incomplete without them. My two bits.

I use headphones, in part because I know it will help me discern target sounds better,
another part to avoid beeping at other people in my vicinity (parks, schools & playgrounds),
and it will definitely enhance battery life.

Use three old tesoro machine and the little yeller feller with inexpensive audio headphones.
My 1280x headphones are fixed.

It seems the audio quality of the little yeller feller is just blatant and of little quality, so will
resign existing phones to it, and buy detector specific phones for my Tesoros.

Killer B's seem to be getting the biggest buzz within the threads...

Are they considered "best" for the older Tesoro machines?

Thanks,

rmptr

Hi Rmptr,

Part of the buzz about Killer Bs is the affordability.

My Basic Killer Bs have just one volume control but materials and performance that matches more expensive head phones.

Price $72. No tax, no shipping.

I bought a set of wireless headphones at radio shack because I didn't wont to spend the money on MD headphones and that ended up costing me $70 for cheep headphones.

It is definitely worth it,

I dunno about adding depth, but quality headphones helps me discern subtle changes when using a threshold that is just barely audible. Something I don't hear using a machine built-in speaker. Audio is important - so quality headphones is important to me.
Always used headphones - always will...

Thanks Tabdog,

I'll look at their line...

Kinda need two volume controls or a balance control...

Got one harley ear and the other is leaving, but not as fast!

There are other brands at the next level but most are simular. But check it out there is some variety. Monte likes KBs scorpion I think.

I have seen Ads for headphones that purport to add depth in some magical way. Take them in the same vein as LRL device Ads. :pulltab:

I just tried a cheep set of Fisher M-Scope headphones. It was like listening to a conversation through a closed door. I just couldn't hear what was going on.

I would like to try their delux 300 ohm headphones.

Just thought I'd add that,

I havent even got mine yet,I should have ordered some headphones when I ordered the MD.I guess I can get them later,I have some layin around the house somewhere I can use temperarely.

As for the way the question is wrote, and the way I understand it,even the best head phones wont any any more depth to the MD.But it will allow the fainter signals to be heard where using the MD speaker or cheap headphones wont be heard.

If you can't hear a faint signal very good, how are you going to determin to dig or not? You don't. So you don't dig because past experience tells you not to. Good targets don't come along as often as trash so experience of digging iffy signals is not good without quality headphones. That's how it adds depth.

A TID will lie to you with deep targets. The only way to know it's not just noise or trashy stuff is to hear it very well. That in effect allows you to dig iffy signals with better success. Does that not add to the depth at which you can search?

Cheers,

Wow!

What a GREAT idea:clap:

Got to try headphones with my machine...

rmptr

I hesitate to write this because I only have used cheapy headphones.

o Most headphones (even the cheapys) are pretty good in the normal frequency range of music of 50 to 20,000 Hz.

o Metal detector signals are in the range of (I'm guessing) 1,000 to 3,000 Hz. and they may be anything from beeps to chirps to buzzes (snaps -crackles - pops).

o My humble opinion is that it would be much nicer and more effective if detector maker's provided a way to TUNE the signal reaching the headphone.

Having said that I will now try to "test drive" various hi end headphones at a detector shop and see if my humble opinion might even be right :)
