Discrimination vs. Notch??

Member
I've been using a Deus 1 since 2014 and am currently waiting for my new Deus 2 to arrive. I'm not fully understanding the difference(s) between discrimination and notch. I've read about these settings and watched videos but I'm missing something.
If a user wanted to set a detector to ignore all TID's from, for example, 0 to 30, what's the difference in discriminating or notching TID's 0 to 30? Also, what's the advantage/disadvantage of discriminating 0 to 10, then notching 11 to 30, or disc. 0 to 5 and notching 6 to 30, or 0 to 20 and 21 to 30?

I know that Iron Volume controls the tones of the discriminated TIDs and notched TIDs are silent. Is that the only difference??

You can't discriminate from 0 to anything. Disc starts at the lowest possible setting, -6.4. Notch can start anywhere and end anywhere. This allows you to cut out any numbers you do not like. You can notch out from -6.4 to 30 or any other number, but it takes much longer than just discriminating the same. The advantage of notch is that you can disc out any numbers you don't like, i.e., you can notch out everything except nickels if you want. No way to do that with disc.

Ah the great debate! Disc versus Notch. Personally I don't think there is much difference in performance between the two. I am sure others will have different opinions. However if you want to use Iron Volume you do need to run some Disc.
This is the great debate. But I think it should be Disc VS Notch VS Tone Break. My take on this has always been Tone Break instead of discrimination or Notch. I subscribe to the thinking of Andy Sabisch on this. Basically discrimination is just a necessary evil. Use it with caution. I never thought that the sides of a notch were accurate enough. You want to notch out 18-19 and you get some 17 and 20 too. Not a good trade off. There is a cost for every setting no free ride. My version of this game is let's say I use a very little disc say 4.5 then I set the tone -6.4- 4.5 as 100khz "Grunt" Then using the original question numbers I then set the second tone bin 4.6-30 TIDs as 100khz also. So in effect I have now set my machine to 100khz from -6.4-30 TID Everything after 30 has whatever tone I have set as my first positive tone. I have a very quick machine that is using almost no discrimination. This is the way I taught it in the Deus boot camps. Get out there
