Disappearing Signals ???

From my experience it could be a few things. And believe me I've chased plenty of ghost signals trying to be a hero.

1) Small tiny near surface target acting like a larger deeper target.

2) Iron halo effect as others have mentioned. what kind of numbers are you getting on these targets 1/3X's that could be iron wrap around. Also are they 1 way 2 way or 4 way targets? 1 way and 2 way may be iron falses. Also If they don't pinpoint on the best tone then also probably an iron false. I've gotten some really good sounding 2 way signals and dug nails which were sometimes very thin and small and hard to pinpoint.

3) You might turn the sens down a few notches and see if that helps.

4) As mentioned above pockets of black sand if you have any?

Try smooth or long audio response. I find there is a big diff in the sound of a good target from iron false with that change.

Disappearing signals are a piece of iron that has completely rusted. When you dig it and spread it out in the dirt it disintegrates into the soil. A solid piece of iron will detect as iron.Rust will detect as a coin.Hope this helps.

I've experienced this at the beach - I get a deep signal 10" +, scoop a big scoop or two out, then rescan. No signal, but it is there in pinpoint mode. I solved this issue for me by insuring I always pinpoint on the deep signals. I believe it is an air gap issue - 10" of air between the detector and the target. Most of the time it was a very deep bottle cap. If the signal disappears, try using pinpoint to recover it.

I have been using this CTX for about 7 months now and dug close to 5000 coins and over 140 silvers with it and I have had dozens of instances where the signal disappears completely for a few sweeps. Many, many, times it will say it is 7 to 8 inches deep, I dig a shovel full out of the hole and the signal goes away. I am not talking about iron, but pennies or coins of any types! I can pinpoint over the hole and it is still in there but nothing on the sweep! I have flipped out a shovel full of dirt and I can pinpoint it in the dirt outside the hole, and quite often it is right there on the surface of the dirt but there is NO signal from the CTX! I am not unhappy with the machine, not dissatisfied or any of that! It is just something that happens! Like take a coin out of the hole, pick it up and re-sweep the hole an there will be a signal still there. Second sweep and there is nothing at all. Sort of like a signal that has sort of hung in midair.

I may be a bit long in the tooth at 70, but I am not crazy. Most of the time anyway. :wiggle:
