Disapointing trip to the Outer Banks

Howdy All,

I'm really new here and to metal detecting in general. I bought an ACE 250 a few months ago and have been having a ball hunting local parks and so forth. Been finding clad, a silver ring and lots of trash.

My family and I went on our family vacation last week. I was pretty excited about the possibility of lots and lots of beach hunting. Herein lies the problem. The area where we were staying is located in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Metal detecting is strictly forbidden. If anyone is going to be there, you CANNOT legally metal detect south of Nags Head. Beach access points have signs posted that tell you that detectors are prohibited. Believe me, I was tempted. (I didn't by the way ....) I don't understand. I can drive my 4X4 on the beach, I can build fires on the the beach, kids can dig all manner of Grand Canyon wannabes on the beach, but I can't use a metal detector and trowel. Oh well. I guess since the area is called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" there may be concerns of people digging items of historical significance.

Anyway, I drove north to Nags Head to try my hand. The beach was loaded with trash. I'm still new and learning my machine so I was in all metal mode and digging everything. Lots and lots of beer caps, a beer can buried about 10 inches deep, a Skoal can buried on it's side at about 8 inches ... you get the idea. The only things that I found were 2 pennies and some sort of trashy, mood ring looking thing. I did find a rather cool looking nail. It looks to be an old square nail that has been in the water for some time. It has all sorts of stuff growing on it. I'll try to get a photo.

Bottom line, I'm disapointed, but I still had a good time.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Cheers,
LW

:usaflag:I know the feeling. It's so easy to have high expectations whenever I find a new spot. And usually the first trip is purely experimental and a bit disappointing.

The very first place I tried my Ace 250 out was Emerald Isle just off Swansboro area of NC. (Bogue Sound area). I hunted all over that beach and the thing was bing-bonging about every second. I dug what I thought was a good signal and about a foot down I finally found a bottle cap! :veryangry: Never found anything but trash. But I really didn't know my machine at the time. I was on full sensitivity in all metal mode. I have learned so much just reading this forum every day, and going back and reading everything I could on the Ace as far back as 100 pages of this forum. Now I really want to go back and try it again! But alas, the daughter we visited down there is now moving back to NY and there will be nowhere to stay if we go down. Darn! I just feel so much more prepared now!:nopity:

Nice to have another member of the International Metallic Waste Removal Fraternity. Good luck and have fun
