Digging tools..

What kind of digging tools is everyone using? Right now I lug around a shovel and a garden trowel. Looking at maybe a Lesche or there are a few others on E Bay that look pretty decent. Here is one..http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250602941025&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Can't really afford the $70 variety..more like $40.

mcdave, i use a digger made by A.M. Leonard. it has saw teeth on one side of the blade and has a 6 inch blade. it runs about 27.00 with a heavy duty leather sheath. it works great and is well made. i believe it states in the description of the digger that it will take 300 pounds of force and not break. very nice digger for the money. the website is
www.amleo.com.

I saw that digger at Agway last night and I must say it is impressive. I use the Lesch and I love it and I truly feel that I have bought my last digger as the Lesch realy is that good. But, If I didn't have the Lesch I would have bought that 7 in 1 tool that you found listed on ebay. Just so you know though ypou can get that tool at Agway for around 24 bucks.:garrett:

Also look at th Ames 7 in 1 Tool
any garden cente should have it
$17.00 here in the Burgh

Rangers Lead The Way

That's the exact same digger made by Ames sold at any Lowes store for $13.00 It looks like it's simply been renamed for Jackson.

:usaflag:Thanks guys..I could'nt find the $27 tool at the A.M. Leonard website, but they had a Lesche style one for $43. Agway..as far as I could tell..did'nt have an online store. And there is'nt an Agway outlet within 100 miles of me. Lowes however, is within driving distance. And my wife recently gave me a $200 gift card for that store so I could do home repairs.:super:

the digger that lowes sells has worked just great for me....

mcdave, on the a.m. leonard website go to the list of products and click on hand tools. then click on weeders and cultivators. go to page 7 and it is the knife with the orange handle. i don't think you could break this knife if you tried....and it is 29.00 with the sheath not 27.00.

:usaflag:Joe Dirt...thanks...must have missed that the first time. I'm taking a ride to Lowe's tonight so I may have something by the time I'm through.:usaflag:

I use a Wilcox 102 and a home made long trowel.
I also use a folding US Army entrenching shovel when out in the fields and woods. Make no mistake, the money put into genuine military surplus entrenching tools will be well spent

I HAVE LESCH DIGGING TOOL AND I HAVE TREASURE WISE 3 IN ONE DIGGING TOOL
AND A 7 IN ONE DIGGING TOOL 7 IN ONE DIGGING :yo::super::thumbup::detecting::hot:

:usaflag:And here is my Lowe's special...13 bucks. Pretty solid and quite sharp. My only gripe is that it's not American made:usaflag:

looks great Dave, where did you get it?
Got it from the garden section in Lowe's Hardware..

I bought one of those same kind but never used it yet, I think it is called Jackson. I now use an Off-Set blade, Lesche type digger mostly.

I want to find and would like to have a bigger diameter long handled plug digger(called a bulb planter), because the one I have is about 3 inches(in my dad's garage and cannot measure it now) and pinpointing has to be right on with it so as not to damage a target. Although the Hole Hog use to be 3". I want one at about 4 to 6 inches diameter.

There are short handled ones but I prefer a foot-step-on, Long Handled Bulb Planter that has a Quick-Release trigger and kicks out the plug very easily(on to a price of cloth or flexible cutting board to find the target, then put the dirt neatly back in the hole).
This is the one I have:

This my my bag of tricks. I keep them in my trunk most of the time. That way they
are usually close if I need em. But actually, I rarely actually dig.. I use the polished down
screwdriver probe 98% of the time. I erupt the ground, rather than dig it. :/
But every once in a while I'll run across something bigger where I might actually have to
dig it out. So I have the mini shovels.. I got a digger with my machine, but I broke it after
about two days of use.. Too fragile.. So I replaced it with the orange handle job.. You'll
have trouble breaking that puppy.. I think it was about $5 at Home Depot.. The longer
handle wooden shovel I bought for $1 at the dollar store.. It's not that strong, but as long
as not abused can be handy for deep holes..But you can tell by looking at it, if you used
too much force as a lever, the "stem" part would start to bend and eventually break.
But for a buck.. What the hey.. I'm too cheap to spend much money on digger tools..
Like I say, I use the probe most the time anyway.. BTW, the machete is for whacking
weeds, vines, etc.. Could also be handy if the booger man tries to get me...
Normally, all the diggers are kept in the pseudo leather pouch, which originally housed
the first digger I had that lasted two days.. The ford push rod is my backup probe..
It's actually pretty good, but lacks the handle..

Hello! I am new to metal detecting, but in the same week I got my Ace 250, I went through 3 set of garden trowels. The first one was an old one I had in my shed, it bent out of shape at the second hole I made in the soil. Then I got a nice set of telescopic garden trowel. It looked very solid and thick, it also bent at the first hole, then I got another garden trowel. On the packaging it was saying it was made of tempered steel and was very strong...well it also bent in the second hole.... One thing they all have in common is they are all crap made in China.

I ordered a Lesche Digging tool. It costs a lot more than those other cheap digging tools, but I hope this will be the last digging tool I will buy. In the long run I will save money.

Like the old saying goes...when you buy the best quality product, you only cry once...

Trust me when I say you won't need to buy anothe and you won't be bending it on the first, second or third hole. That think is tank proof!:garrett:

This ties in with what weve been saying about getting the right nugget detector. When you have proven reliable tools for the work at hand, there is no substitute.
