Diggers show on NatGeo

Well, looks like the show diggers has given our hobby a black eye in the world of archaeology. Last night I googled the show to see if any more episodes were going to be aired and found a string of negative publicity for the show. There is even a facebook page titled "Stop National Geographic Looting Show". I believe this show has definitely given our hobby a black eye. I feel like we had our chance to show the world the code of ethics we as serious treasure hunters live by. These goons were digging holes 10 times the size of their targets which is just rediculus. There they were on some unbelievable places I would give anything to hunt on and acted like they were at the local tot lot hunting clad coins and the occasional children's ring. I feel like we had our chance to show the world our exciting hobby in a professional light and "they" blew it. I'm just ashamed they were using AT Pro's. I don't want to see Garret's good name even being affiliated with them. To me these guys look like a couple of Academy Bounty Hunter goons that don't deserve to represent our hobby to the public. What a shame. Here is the link to the letter to NatGeo from the Chairman and CEO of the Society for American Archaeology. http://saa.org/Portals/0/SAA/Press/Diggers.pdf

Garrett had no say whatsoever about the content or what detector brand were to be used. It was all written, dialogged & directed by someone from National Geographic TV Channel, which was recently bought out by Fox Cable Network along with the rights to use the name "NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Channel" for TV. Sensationalism unfortunately sells, and that is usually the type of content Fox Cable Network likes to portray.

Bad thing is these 2 guys are in a few of the Garrett AT Pro/Gold training videos, and act NOTHING like what they did on the show...They also are NOT King George and the Ring Master to my knowledge...Too bad these guys sold their souls for a few bucks and 60 minutes of fame...I would NEVER trust a word they said again...
I would think Garrett would want nothing to do with them as well...As stated, they had the chance to do great good, but instead opted to sell out and make us ALL look bad...I for one was outraged...
I can be a goofball, but NOT when my hobby is on the line...NG aired this show in my local area again yesterday...

HH,

Let's set the record straight....Garrett had the show listed on their site. They was gonna get some free air time with these guys using Garrett equipment. So don't be fooled. These guys have put out several Dvds....these videos was marketed as extreme metal detecting. In these videos the acted like they do on the show.....so get over it. Don't watch it. The show wasn't made as an instructional how to video. So for all you guys complaining, about code of ethics, and needing to be showed how to dig a proper plug...or even filling in your holes...they are plenty of videos on YouTube to teach you. I myself know how to dig a proper plug, I know to fill in my holes, I know the code of ethics. I learned all of that by reading my detector manual, magazines, and even watched those you tube videos. I understand the show, I understand what was being done. I hope to see you guys put together some videos that offers to correct everything you guys complain about.

I second that Bid Red...I'm 100% more sick of all the negitive, judgemental metal detectorist here...geez what a bunch of whiners...

The show is entertaining, I enjoy it. Do you want to see a bunch of old farts talking slow and have dead emotions and digging slow and be boring to death?

Man, talk about metal detecting pride...it's a disease on these forums sometimes.

Don't watch the show or go to Youtube for you instructional videos if thats what you want...It's easy to be negative...say something positive about the show...I challenge you.

Are you kidding me??? Step OUTSIDE the hobby and become the average Joe on the street who sees this show...Do you think any respectful land owner would let a couple of clowns like that on their property...Take it from the point of view of the Archeologist...They are having a field day with this show...Another notch on their gun to try to close us down...Take it from the viewpoint of the Park Ranger..."We don't want you "Jackholes" in our park digging for Juice!"
WE know the show does not portray our hobby in a proper light and was meant for entertainment, but what about Joe Smoe who do not know...
This kind of show does us GREAT damage...

HH,

I agreee with GoGoGopher.

There's no way I'd tolerate hunting with these idiots. They're everything most of us aren't.

I understand that sensational sells on TV, but I don't have to watch it, and I won't. Archies are going to show this as a prime example of why they need restrictive laws.

My best days are when I can find something that someone lost and can make them happy.

Your negitive comments do damage to our hobby...

In my opinion, they were assclowns and no where near real detecting. I will not watch that show if they air any more episodes.

Are you kidding me is Right!! There are two words to accurately describe anyone who had/has a problem with the show Diggers. "Up Tight." Ya, these guys were clowns. That's what made the show so darn good! I've been metal detecting for many years, and I do respect the Archaeology community but to call these guys and everyone affiliated with this show "Looters?" C'mon. You're just angry because they're finding things that you can

Bad publicity is good publicity for movie stars, but not good for the hobby, it has to go! I like to detect out of sight and out of mind, now everybody wants one and it will get us band from parks and such because some newbie leaves holes everywhere! That's my 2 cents!

Hmmm, FMJ joins the forum and posts two identical rants for his first two posts. I wonder who he works for. The production company? The network? Must have struck a nerve there. Ah well, a troll is a troll......doesn't even sound like he knows very much about the hobby.

I quit watching TV in general years ago because it insulted my intelligence. Even the news was so pathetically biased and sensationalistic I gave up on it. Now I sometimes go for the weather forecast before turning it on.

What scares me though is how many people today can't think critically about the drivel they see on the boob tube. They know it's over the top foolishness but because they immerse themselves in it it has become part of their reality. One the one side will be all the folks running out to buy their new machine to go make easy money with and leaving destruction in their wake. On the other hand will be the reactionaries in power who will feel they need to do something to protect the "common good". All fed by a bunch of amoral media buffoons who make their money and laugh on the trip to the bank before they move on to their next debacle.

And I've worked around the media/entertainment business as a supplier at times to make me see more then I like. Another reason I'm getting ready for a major change in my life's direction I guess.

We all act like fools now and again when we make a good find and might even make little side bets for the best find of the day. Who offers to take a bite out of a cow pattie if what he claims is a token but turns out to be a washer?
