Did a Good Deed (I hope)

On a Spring day in Jacksonville, Florida, swinging the coil with the Garrett GTI2500, on some curb strips.

Got a signal and image of a target under some leaves. Up came a set of car keys. Some poor guy lost his keys to his car. He must have spent a lot of time looking for them.

What to do with them? There's no ID tag, and no other information on them. I hung them up on a nail on the fence, right above where he lost them. Maybe he'll come back again and see them.

I have found many a set of keys at the beach, I post them on craigslist sometimes they are claimed and sometimes their not, key fobs are expensive to replace. Once I found a fob on the sand, lots of people walking and somebody must of just dropped it. The area that I found it has street parking along the beach, so on my way out I knew what type of car by the key fob and as I passed a Toyota I pressed the unlock and sure enough the lights flashed and I waited for the owners. They showed up and I was able to return the Keys. Maybe you can check by doing the same thing in the general area that you found them.

Poor guy. If he sees the keys he is going to start thinking I dont remember climbing over no stinking fence!!!!! 😂

Couple years ago we found a set of car keys in the park, couldn't find the owner so we did about the same thing as you did but instead of a fence we hung them on the branch of a low hanging limb. Well a week later we were back in the area metal detecting and this lady pulls up in this fancy Volvo, rolls her window down and yells, did you guys find some keys around here? We yell back and point at the tree, she gets out, finds her keys and says you guys are life savers and she would give us a reward but she didn't have her purse. I then said we're going to be here all day if you want to stop by later, you guessed it, we never saw her again.

You did about all you could do... hopefully the owner will return and find them.
I have had some luck with some I have found... they had little tags on them from various places... I just dropped them in the mailbox.
I found a set for a lady last year that she dropped in a pile of leaves next to her car.
I don’t even think she thanked me.

Little off subject, but talking about rewards, a lady contacted our club and said she had lost a valuable ring while raking the yard and if any of our club members searched and found it she would donate $200.00 to our club. 5 or 6 of us got together the following Sat and drove the 35 or so miles out to her country place and hunted the big yard for about 4 hours....and to no avail. One of our retired club members made an additional two trips out to her place searching for the ring and on the last trip found the ring. He said it was a 18k several thousand dollar honker. Upon returning the ring to her she asked for our club mailing address and stated the check would get mailed as soon as her hubby got home with the check book. Two weeks later, no check, so our club sec. called her and told her we hadn't yet received the check. She said, "what check." Our sec reminded her about her reward amount offering if any club member found the ring. She stated, "ya, well, I thought clubs like yours did that kind of thing for free, but I will get a check off to you right now." Three days later we received a check for $25.00. HH Jim tn

This does not surprise me.
The lady I found the keys for stated she had buried her deceased husband’s wedding ring in the woods and now would like to have it... I told her I could come out and look for it if she could remember where she buried it.
I met her and we walked a couple hundred yards from her house into the woods and she showed me about where to look... I made two trips out there, but never did find it... she never even offered me anything for looking for it or thanked me for trying....
Fortunately not everyone is like this... some folks are very grateful for us taking the time to locate a lost item.

I have had good returns and some not so good. I had one where she did not even say thank you. The best non monetary reward was watching the tears stream down a young ladies face when i handed her ring to her. . She had gotten married on Saturday. Lost the ring on Sunday and i found it and handed it to her on Monday. It was her wedding band. Sterling silver scrap value of maybe a dollar but it meant the world to her.

Jim in TN, You are completely correct. I’ve had people act indignant that I wouldnt drop everything I was doing to rush over and be at their command. I get it they freak out when something valuable or sentimental gets dropped but why am I the bad guy??? Most folks around here are pretty nice about asking for help in these situations. Recently I’ve been getting increased requests to locate property corner pins in the more rural areas. I usually refuse money to do it, instead let me play around your property and keep what I find or give me a cup of coffee or ice tea and I’m happy.

Well, I went by the spot again today. The keys are still hanging there, on a nail on the fence. They're easily seen by anyone walking or driving by. I guess the guy hasn't been out looking, or doesn't need them anymore.

Cheers,

Joe

I went by there again, just to check it out. After more than a month, the key's still hanging there on a nail on the fence. It's easy to see it from the street. I guess the guy is doing OK without it.

Cheers,

Joe

Maybe keys were replaced & he/she had just stopped by for a quick hunt & is gone from that area? Never know? Mystery for sure! Maybe a key collector will come by & take them! Ma

Was a good deed I'm surprised no one came and got them. Maybe they don't know where they lost them? Good karma for sure!

what happened to finders keepers? I would have went around looking for the car/truck and when I found it took a picture and posted it on here as one of my greatest finds! I mean who wouldn't want to find a vehicle metal detecting???
of course I'm Just kidding...;) hanging them on the fence is a great Idea if they even remember where they lost them. and no good deed goes unnoticed... may your future hold a bucket lister you have always wanted!
