DFX user gets an EX SE

When you say "iffy", what exactly do you mean?
Does the detector sound off in all four directions?
Is the good signal mixed in with some junk signals?
Does the signal bounce around?
How did the wheat's pinpoint?
Did you know you were digging a wheat just by the numbers for ferrous and conductivity?

I have a new SE coming and have been lurking here for about three weeks learning.

Thanks

I have limited time with the ESE, so there are others here that can do a better job of answering your questions. But since I have 3 yrs of experience with other detectors, I will try my best to help.
I don't think I can explain an "iffy" signal but I can tell you some of the characteristics.

It usually sounds good when sweeping from one direction but not any other. (it is a tone thing)

If you are watching the display, the target will bounce around some but in a repeatable way. (this is where switching to Iron Mask is very helpful)

It usually pinpoints similar to a coin's characteristics. (if it is on edge it will be a little differnt)

After poinpointing the target and resweeping it, it doesn't move (like iron does)

As for my hunting style with the ESE, I listen the sounds first, then I
will switch pinpoint mode second, and finally I will switch Iron Mask mode to make my final determination. I use Conduct mode and the Smartfind window.

I hope this helps and good luck with your new detector.

I was driving home tonight and saw where they had torn down a small building in the downtown area. They had already scraped the ground and were hauling off the dirt. Since there was only 30 minutes of sunlight left, I stopped and asked the workers if I could run my detector across the lot. They said it was OK. Since there were power transformers nearby I turned down the sensitivity to manual 2 so I could maintain a threshold. Within 10 minutes I nailed a 1905 Indian at about 1 inch. Excited I kept hunting but didn't get anymore good signals for the next 15 minutes(I was hunting fast trying to cover ground, probably too fast) As the sun was going down, I finally got another good signal that turned out to be a 1942 Merc. I hope I can get back there before they turn this lot into another parking lot.

I went back this evening and hunted the lot slowly. I didn't get any real good finds though. Just 3 wheats (1939, 1944, 1945), a Hickok belt buckle (circa 1930s) and two cool looking buttons. I talked to one of the construction workers and he told me where the dumped the 24" of soil that they removed from the site. I plan on going there this weekend and hunt this soil. Who knows what I will find...

After a couple weeks of ownership, I really like this detector and I'm glad that I purchased it. I find that it is very simple to use yet extremely powerful. I highly recommend that any other Whites owners are looking at a ESE, they should make the plunge.

I have had my ESE for 3 days shy of one month and I thought I should probably post a couple pics of my good finds (no clad) as well as my trash. As I have a full time job, I only get to hunt on weekends and the very occasional evening. {Note: I have 8 more Wheats and one merc that are not pictured here because I tried cleaning them with my homemade electrolysis machine - big mistake; can you say scrap metal}

So after a month, I feel quite confident in saying that the ESE is one outstanding detector with the ability to ID targets at some impressive depths. I don't have any hesitation in saying, "That I think that anyone that decides to purchase an ESE will not be sorry".

Nice finds TX, what does your partner think now of the Explorer? I bet he will want one too if you keep pulling out the good stuff. HH,
Steve(MS)

Took the day off from work and went to a small town about 100 miles away to try my luck at a city park that I scouted out several weeks ago (it was opened in the early 1950s). I used the SunRay X8 and had the ESE configured with a custom discrimination pattern and Sensitivity of 21. I took my time and didn't get in a hurry. I kept my swing - slow and low. For the most part, I only dug targets that were greater than 4 inches deep. I found all of these coins within an area of about 100'x 75'. All of the wheats were in the 4" - 6" depth range. The dimes were all between 5" - 6". The Washington Quarter was at 6". The Standing Liberty was dug at a tad deeper than 8".

I continue to be impressed with the ability of the ESE to correctly ID targets at depths over 6". And the X8 coil sure is nice and helps the ESE's balance.

Pretty good stuff for just a month...I've only had mine for three days & like you I am very impressed with the ID accuracy/depth...I'm still testing settings & refineing my pinpoint skills...it rained today but is clearing tonight so I'll be hitting the park tomorrow. I do have to disagree with your opinion that anybody that tries the SE will Love it.....If not for this forum I wouldn't be hitting the park tomorrow...I'd still be trying to make sense of it all & would probably just stumble along for the next couple of months trying to figure it out....The manual is not very well written as far as I'm concerned & can be confuseing...when I first turned the detector on it was like it was talking to me in Chinese...I can understand how some people could get frustrated real easy with the Exp....A BIG THUMBS UP TO ALL ON THIS FORUM......who, with their excellent posts & advice, have made this a very pleasant learning experience...Tom:thumbup:

I dunno - I have a ESE and I just bought a DFX. I can tell the same story but in reverse.
I liked the Minelab, but for now the DFX is my current favorite.

Not sure if one is better than the other, that can certainly be debated, but they certainly are different. Each has is merits and personality.

To me, the Minelab may be a shade more powerful, what with all those frequencies going, - but the learning curve was way too steep. All of the sounds are too much.

The DFX just seemed to click for me.

Good luck with the Minelab, I may have give mine another try.
