Detectorists with Cancer

How many of us are out there? I have noticed 2 others on the boards so far. My doctor tells me this is very good mental and physical therapy. I have inoperable carcinoid tumors. I am in a medical trial and so far am beating the odds. How about you?

Yep, skin for me...and since I've started this hobby, I havn't felt this good in 20 years! Mentally and physically...i think a lot of folks get cancer in their life without even knowing it...it comes and goes, unless it really jumps up and bites a person hard, thats just my own personal theory, but I see as of late those Cancer Treatment Centers are getting big on a holistic approach to treatment...stay in it Steve!

I have prostate cancer. They put radiation seeds in it over three years ago. So far so good. I am 71 years old. Detecting is getting harder every year. But I still get out there quite a bit and really enjoy it. I swing a light weight Technetics Omega.

i just lost my hunting buddy last week from lung cancer...mark was a great guy, swinging a soveriegn gt with a wot coil ,retired from the air force and only 62....

I had tonsil cancer in 2001 2 surgeryes ,2 rounds of radiation 6 weeks each then toped off with chemo every 3 weeks spent 4 days in hosp. getting iv's. BUT I kicked cancers BUTT better shape now at 61 than at 51 so some good came out of it.I hope all of you going through this bad illness the best and hope ya'll have the same results I had.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will be thinking of all of you tomorrow as they put "Gods little soldiers" in my arm. That is what I call every drop of chemo.

God Bless,
Steve

Leukemia here. So far not to aggressive, but it does sap your strength (not enough red blood cells to carry oxygen) so I can't swing my detector for the long periods of time I once could. But md'ing is still great therapy; being outside away from the boob tube and in the open air is the way life is meant to be lived. Fortunately for me, my wife of 48 years is an even bigger fan of metal detecting than me; we go everywhere together and enjoy finding our nickels, dimes, and occasional gold rings. We've all gotta go sometime, so why worry about little things like C. Let's enjoy what we still have.

God Bless you guys.----My heart goes out to you & I have held all of you up in prayer.----------Del

Like Rick5224, I had tonsil cancer. First detected in 2006. Chemotherapy, seven weeks of the nastiest radiation, a long recuperation. Thought I had it licked. Moved to Oklahoma from Texas at the end of 2007. In February, 2008, I had a blood clot in my leg, and embolisms in my lungs. Doctors then found the cancer has returned and mestastisized in bones of my sternum, pelvis and spine, and has since creeped into my lungs and liver. I'm on my fourth different chemo treatment (the first three failed). Despite some rough days, I am still working full-time. I'm 43 years old, so retirement is just a pipe-dream. My wife and I decided metal detecting is a good hobby to try, since it gets me out of the house and excercising a bit. We are about a month into the hobby, finding a lot of junk, and enjoying the heck out of our time together digging dirt.

For the Count

If your cancer gets bad enough to affect your work you can probably get SSDI. If you qualify you will get approved in less than 2 weeks. It took 6 days for me to get approved. There is a list of 88 diseases that will qualify you for compassionate disability and they fast-track you if you have 1 of them. I actually got a raise when I went on SSDI.

Blacktoe, thanks for the info. I've thought about this on and off recently. I've only been working at my new job for two years, and really enjoy it. But, I know at some point, I will be unable to work. I didn't realize the SSDI process could be managed so quickly. I will look into this (my wife says I need to be more proactive). As long as I feel well enough, I will work. Of course, all that extra detecting time at home would be nice... My wife and I are getting new detectors after the new year (AT Pro, Fisher F4)...:clapping:

Do you or anyone that you know suffer from pain or inflamation?
If so ....send me a PM and I will send you a product "No charge" that may help you.

It has done wonders for my wife. It's all natural .....was featured in Time Magazine.
some time ago.

Keep up the good fight fellas. I was diagnosed with Melanoma 3+ years ago. Luckly mine was caught early and the Dermatologists were able to take care of it.

I hope all of you are wearing sunscreen while out hunting. I am now restricted to doing my hunting early morning or evening when the sun is not high.

I guess all of the years of thinking I was too cool for sunscreen caught up with me. Trust me, no one is too cool to protect themselves.

Keep up the positive mental attitude (pma)

Mitto

Thanks for the supporting words, Mitto. Fortunately, I've never been a "sun type" person, and always wear sunscreen, long sleeved shirts, hats, especially now. My wife will "kindly" remind me if I don't follow the precautions. Of course, I was foolish enough to smoke cigarettes, which caused my initial cancer, which has put me in my current predicament. It's amazing how easy it is to quit cold turkey when the doctor tells you "quit or die".

As for positive mental attitude (PMA), I think most of us here (at least from trolling and reading the posts for some time), have really good attitudes. Knowing my time is limited has made me a more positive person. I no longer worry about the little things in life that used to bother me. I know it sounds maudlin, but I truly feel that any day in which I am able to watch the sunset with my wife, is a good day. And obviously, any day spent metal detecting, is also a good day. ;)

Count,I will tell you and the rest on here that juicing will help you in recovering,I was waiting my turn for rad. tret. while talking to another man he told me about juicing and it really does help.I have been juicing for 10 years now I did quit for about a year but started back, also buy some local honey unfiltered from an independent bee keeper and take at least one tablespoon a day it will keep you from getting sick it is a natural antibiotic and taste good to. the omega vrt330 is a great juicer it will juice green leaf plants , grasses, and any thing else you may want. you can order them on line about $300 I think had mine about a year or so now used a juiceman before that cheaper but can't do greens with it.

I was diagnosed with Melanoma 18 Months ago. It was in the center of my back about golf ball. It was found and removed before it got into my blood. I I was told in less than 6 months I would Have been in a bad way. By the Grace of God and a young Intern at Houston V.A. I am Cancer Free.

There are a bunch of us. Lung cancer 1999 , brain tumor 2004, new knee 2006, another brain tumor, 2008. I am a survivor and at 69 still swinging. This is a terrific hobby, good exorcise, good friends, good finds.

Don't deny yourself all sun exposure. Human body needs some sun exposure to create vitamin D, and lack of vitamin D is implicated in getting cancer. Obviously you don't want to burn in the sun either, but a little sunshine each day (without any screening) I think would be beneficial. My wife was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and we've been doing lots of reading and research into causes of cancer. good luck!

My prayers go out to all of the members with cancer and their families. I have a referral to an oncologist in January, but hope it isn't cancer. Praying for all of you and wish you the best. I thought the lump in my neck was caused by an abcessed tooth I had, but my regular doctor checked me over and found a small lump under my left arm. I just thought it was a gland problem due to adrenal gland problems I have and diabetes. I did find lots of info on the internet about healthy eating and juicing and a place about some guy from Canada who makes a hemp oil out of cannabis that is supposed to cure cancer, but it's illegal where I live and out of the question. Besides, I have no idea my problem is serious at all. The wait and see attitude is best for me right now. I am scared, tho. God bless all of you and I pray for your healing.
