Detector for salt water beaches. . .

Looking to get a new PI beach detetcor for salt water and checkking out the Tesoro Sand Shark and the Garrett Sea Hunter II. Seems like a pretty even match up. Any feedback or thoughts from users?

Of those two, I have a Sand Shark and have not tried the Sea Hunter II. Sand Shark, with the box clipped in on the upper shaft behind the arm cuff, balances about perfectly with both the 8 inch and 10 inch coil. I find the head phones very comfortable and they provide very good outside noise isolation and don't whistle in the wind like some water proof headsets I've used. It's a detector that I can easily swing all day. Good battery life, easy to set up. Steady and smooth running, although I've run into interference near a few hotels and resorts that I think are wireless internet hubs. Move away several steps and all is well again. Basically a solid detector that does it's job.
Cheers,
tvr

Tesoro Sand Shark or White's Surfmaster PI Dual Field. Keep in mind the resale value, the Garrett doesn't come close to the SS or Surfmaster.

If you want a PI detector that is light weight, and with a coil that doesn't float, and is more sensitive than average to small gold, you might want to look at the Detectorpro Pulse. It is not made for diving. Wading only. If you are diving, you are better off with the Sand Shark.

JMHO.

I use a Detector Pro Pulse head Hunter with the 11 inch coil also.
It is light and operates on two 9 volt batteries hooked in series so it's working on 18 volts, pretty powerful.
I use rechargeable lithium Ion batteries and keep them fully charged.
I'm happy with it.

The Garrett smokes the other two. I have used the other's and the Garrett is all you need.
All the depth and sensitivity you need plus;
Can the White's or Tesoro do this?

1. Proven waterproof case.........NO
2. Separate battery from electronics.........NO
3. Removable headphones..........NO
4. Headphone adaptor so you can use any other headphones of your choice........NO
4. Removable searchcoils.........NO
5. 8" or 14" coil sizes..........NO
6. Easily mounted on chest or hip...........Maybe?

I can see how the Garrett doesn't come close......:drinking:

Why can't people back up ridiculous claims.

Keep doing your own research and be advised that some dealers enjoy a larger profit margin on certain brands and tend to steer you to those brands.

As I see it, Tesoro can do 1 and 6.

The Tesoro SS case doesn't enjoy the same reliabilty as the Sea Hunter case which is factory sealed.
Water in the SS case and goodbye detector.

Yea, I'm checking all the forums for posts, watching the videos and asking questions. We all have our favorites which is understandable and I'll be sure to do my home work before buying.

You can't beat the Tesoro Sand Shark.

Why not?

People make claims on this forum but never back it up !!!

At least I made an effort to do so.

You are right - but the case is good down to 200 ft and it is also pressure tested at the factory. With just a little care, water has no chance to get in. I have both Tiger Shark and Sand Shark and I have never had any problem with leaking.

I am not saying it is the best, but it is really well built and I personally prefer Tesoro stem over SH II stem. Exchangeable headphones are not necessarily a plus as the ones from Tesoro work really well. Fixed headphones and coil remove two connectors, which are always a weak spot in general.

I would like to have removable headphones and coil as well, but I do not really mind. I was choosing between SH II and SS as well - but I got a great deal on a new SS, so I bought it. If the SH II was cheaper, I would have bought the SH and not regret a minute. I was really close to buying a second hand SH II, but someone was quicker. Now there is another one, but I already have a SS, so I do not care at the moment:)

One of the SS big plusses for me is, that it seems really stable - most of others I have tried had some degree of instability in the threshold. It might not be the deepest of all, but I prefer stability as then I can focus on small changes. If the SS had some kind of ground balance (which COULD be needed in some places), it would be a perfect machine for my purposes.

Often the stable threshold is a result of an advanced factory set pulse delay with the SS at about 22

What beaches will you be hunting?
If you're doing east coast Florida beaches from Cocoa Beach to West Palm you will be wading only unless you're working under a salvage lease for the 1715 fleet.
A PI will go deep so you will need a good digging long handle beach scoop which is another big discussion (see the Beach/Water forum).
Now you're carrying a scoop that weighs 4-5 pounds.
A lightweight PI is 4-5 pounds.
A friend of mine has a Garret Infinium - great detector - but a little heavy for frequent beach use.
So consider EVERYTHING in your research.
My lightweight combo is the Detector Pro HHPI with a custom scoop designed for one-handed digging and assist handles to dig and drain the bucket
See pic.

I decided to get the Tesoro Sand Shark. I'll be on the dry sand as well as wet and in the low surf. Thanks for all the responses and advice. ROBOCOP, I was looking at the DD Pro HH. Looks like a nice machine. That's some nice scoop.

I have a SH but was going to buy a SS when I found a SH less than a month old at a great price....one thing I like about the SH is that if water gets in the battery compartment it goes no further as that part is sealed or separate from the electronics...I have used the SH

for most of the summer with no problems and great deepth...there are things I do not like..I wish there was a way to place a pin pointer on it, but even without it the more I use it the better I get at centering up on the target...there is a learning curve from my Fisher

CZ 70 Pro that I am comfortable with....I would like to be able to hear a different tone for different targets....all targets sound the same to me...I know that people say that small targets are hard to detect, but I recently found a wire that looked like piano wire about

8 inches long at about 8 inches in deepth in water and I think that is pretty good....I feel that the SS is a good detector but I would not trade my SH for one even with money to boot to me....The Sea Hunter Mark II is an excellent machine and i use mine every

weekend and enjoy every minute....take a chance and try one...you will love it...
