Detector Bashing

RLOH

Well-known member
It seems that many people on the Findmall Forums are getting caught up in the brand sensititive opinions. When I first got into the internet forums in the mid 90's I also got caught up in this type of brand bashing. I recently read a long thread about a value type of detector that people got very opinionated with. The people in this hobby should stay above this bull. Even if I think a certain brand is inferior, I will respect the person swinging that detector. I have owned every detector made and I have made good finds with every detector I have used. Remember, the best detector in the hands of a novice is junk and the worst detector in the hands of a pro will produce. It is not up to us to decide what is the "best" and the "worst". Enjoy the hobby and don't lose any sleep over every opinion you hear. If you are happy, that is ALL that matters. R.L.

You can have your opinions about something without badmouthing.I'll get my MD maybe tomorrow, but if someone is using a BH,lettem have fun.
I know a guy here at work, his dad bought a BH last year at Wal Mart,it works for him and he's happy with it.
Only owned a Whites and soon a Minelab,I cant say bad about something if I've never used one.
Even if I new it was junk I wouldnt tell it to their face and hurt their feelings. If I did, well, what goes around comes around!

I feel a BB is an excellent opportunity for any interested person to search for opinions.

If you have a good experience, nice to hear it...

A bad one, I appreciate the opinion of someone's experience.

I would agree that a fine machine may not produce for a person with no experience,
however, a junk machine will benefit only if used as a shovel, whatever your skill level.

If public opinion is swamped by incessant bad reviews of a particular model, or brand,
hopefully it will improve, or cease to exist and good people are not separated from their hard earned money.

Incessant flamers are frequently chased off forums because no one likes a bad apple.

In my stable is a $19.95 chinese discount auto parts store detector.
It remains operational, and functions.
I would not take the time to bash it, because it is, what it is... an entertaining toy.

Ha! I have FUN with my Long Range Locator !!!

My Opinion.

Well said RL,

I have 4 MDs, all the same brand. It's not the best brand and the MDs are not the best of that brand. But they are the ones I have choosen. They have inter changeable coils, which is great and they perform well for me.

I have bashed other brands in the past and regret it now. My world is just a small part of the scope of things. My openion should never throw stones. Some times I cross the line still. That doesn't make it right and to cross that line is not my objective. Nor should it be respected. Just human emotion.

The hobby is to be enjoyied regardless of your toys/tools or methods. I have bashed peoples methods in the name of learning. That can be distructive. The pros are better at being constructive. I can offer help in the right places. I'm trying to find that place. Sometimes I miss the mark.

Live and learn.

Heres to MDing:cheers:

I have also used many different brands..and honestly, they are all good as of late..The Micro processor has really evened things up.
The only real problem is with the user..being familiar with what you use does make for a better detecting experience.... But I will stand by my statement they are all good. IE: I recently bought an Explorer..and because of lack of experience I am not doing well....But I know from others using this machine it is excellent..so it has to be me..NO Experience. So Like the man said enjoy what you have and get out there and find some good stuff.

And I have owned only a few that I've sold for poor (IMO) performance...

Some do better at coins in modern trash, some are better at relics in iron, others are better at sniffing out nickels, a couple are waterproof etc etc.

I've got Garretts, White's, Tesoros, an Explorer a Fisher etc. Pretty much all of them have environments where each one is "the best" choice.

My first MD was a RS/BH machine that made some good finds and got me started.

Best thing is to test your different machines for trash-masking, depth, how they handle minerals etc. and find out where they work the best. All of the major companies make good machines, if they didn't, they'd be out of business.

People who 'bash' brands, by my way of thinking, haven't taken the time and effort to try out different machines.

HH!

I agree with all that has been said above! I have owned Minelabs, Tesoros, Bounty Hunters, and now a Garrett Infinium as well. Each detector has it's place in the scheme of things. I have found most of my best finds with a simple BH Tracker IV. As I now detect Scuba as well I have added the Garrett especially for this. I won't belittle anyone over their detector choice, it's about enjoying the outdoors and the thrill of the chase. I swing full time for a living and I still use different detectors for different enviroments! HH to all, regards Nugget.:ausflag:

I agree, every detector that I have used, I have found things I liked about it and things I didn't like. Just look around people are successful with different brands/ models. The best approach is to be diplomatic as possible when giving an opinion on any detector on forums. Keep in mind too that folks have a long memory when someone bashes a detector or brand especially if you go that forum and make a post in that regard. Detecting is a hobby, making friends is more important than proving a point about a unit being inferior. How you word your remarks can go a long way in how others perceive your intentions, that can make all the difference, be polite when making critical remarks.
JMO,

Im a new kid on the block, around here. What all you guys have posted is good. Its good to read the positive and negative, pros and cons about a machine that you have used and know. I have to admit, for someone new,its overwhelming at times to seperate the pros and cons. But there is a difference between an observation and statement than negative comments. But,even at that I can understand someone having such a bad experience with a particular brand, type, style of detector that they can not but help have a negative outlook on it,however it should be posted in a more civil manner and then move on.
Take me for example, you guys have me wanting to try everything, lol. But I gotta learn what I have first, then move on.
And I think some of you have been around here long enough you have formed a bond/friendship. And I know from my experiences in life with my old running, hunting, fishing buds a fair amount of poking fun is fair game. You know like Fords are no good or Chevys are no good, just cause you drive one or the other. And some people just have a more serious nature about them.
But, this was a good topic and bashing isnt a good thing but its a public forum so we have to overlook some things.
Ive got two White machines so tabdog you leave me be,lol,jk.
I really wish all you and your families a Merry Christmas,
John

I agree with a lot of the what the critics said.Just because I put a high performance engine in my Chevrolet and put 911 Porsh Decals doesn't make it a 911.I have used a lot of different metal detectors and there are some units that just don't work very well.Bottom line there are company's that try to make a fast buck, which in the long run will result in poor sales and credibility.

..something is so gawdaful that I, for one, can't bring myself to sugarcoat things. I'll leave that to politicians (crooks) and those that are obsessed with political correctness (whining pantywaists). ..Willy.

As I always say, " There is no such thing as the "best detector", only the detector that is best for you - not the one that is the best for someone else." That applies to every machine even if you're using a frisbee on the end of a broom stick. If you're happy with it go for it no matter what anybody else says.

Bill

It goes back to the old adage," My dad can whip your dad or my Chevy can beat your Ford." Don't take it so serious, it's just an inanimate object not your wife or mother. Hell people bash detectors I use all the time but I don't get all bent out of shape over it. That's their opinion and they are entitled to it and more power to them.

Bill.

Yeah there is no universal machine. If there was everybody would own one. No machine works the same everywhere. Some machines ( for whatever reason ) work better in some areas than others. That's why manufacturers have field testers all over the the country and the world in many cases.because the soil and conditions are so inconsistent from one place to another.
