rusty nails that is 
...because I used a Fisher CZ70pro for years before I bought my SE

Trust me...that CZ70pro is still in my arsenal and is one of my alltime favorite machines...and trust me on this too...I dug a few deep nails with it
I still dig a few deep rusty nails with my SE too and it's for the same reason I did it with my CZ...because I've trained my ears to try and decipher the difference between a deep rusty nail....and a deep silver coin on edge or in the trash. Am I right all the time....no. Am I right most of the time....again NO.
Sometimes though... does a deep silver coin masked by trash or on edge....pop out every now and then when chasin' these iffy hits?.....YEP

It's 33% machine....33% user....and 33% time spent learning...at least that's how I see it. Just my 2 cent opinion
PS: all the kidding I do about my CZ...and nails. I will NEVER get rid of my CZ70pro...and I still use it. It's a faithful, deep seeking, old friend

i reckon the detector plays quite a big part in the equation as well as understanding what it"s telling you some detectors are just not good at some types of detecting EG how many people do you see detecting tot lots with an explorer finding good stuff or how many people do you see detecting wet sand on salt water Beach's with an ace250 finding good stuff nether of these detectors work well in ether area but swap areas with detectors & if your a good detectorist the finds will start showing up.
so yes understanding your detector will help you make better finds more often but you must also use the right detector for the right situation to make great finds more often.

The best detectorist I know uses an old Troy Shadow. It not even made anymore. Heis so familiar with his tector that he can tell the depth, and demonination of coins before he ever starts to dig. He still gets fooled with pull tabs sometimes but not very often. When I have hunted with him I sometimes just put down my M6 and walk with him. He is amazing. He has been hunting since the 60's.

I've enjoyed this thread a lot. Points out how far persistence and desire will take a person in this hobby no matter what color of machine they swing. Makes me even more impatient for the winter to fade away here. I've had withdrawal symptoms for several months.

You can put in the time to learn a machine and you will well with it. You can't help doing better as you learn how it operates. But there is nothing like getting your hands a unit that you really click with. It may be a certain feature that does it for you, or a combination of things. But you don't know that unless you try a couple. And believe me, when you find a unit you click with, everything else just comes easier. I've learned that I can do ok with any unit, but I do exceptional with those 'special' detectors.
For example, my first Major upgrade was to a Tesoro Cortes. I put in the time, learned it well and did ok with it. Then I got a chance to get a Golden MM as a backup unit. I clicked with the Golden on the first outing and was out hunting my Cortes by the end of that first day. I immediately started making more and better finds with minimum experience because the Golden has features that linked well to my brain and style and hunt sites. I 'clicked' with it.
For someone like me that does a lot of buying and trying, learning various machines, it is because I'm always looking for that next machine that I will click with. My finds and enjoyment immediately increase when I do. That has happened again with the Fisher F5. Immediate bonding, immediately better finds and more enjoyment with only minimum time on the unit. And it just keeps getting better.
I continue this process of buying and trying and learning detectors. Matching detectors to sites and conditions that I don't have a "clicker" for yet. Wish me luck! I still haven't found that special deep turf unit yet. I've to two left to try. Perhaps it doesn't even exist yet and I'll just have to 'do time' with a second best until somebody makes it. But I'll never know unless I try them.
