Detector Advice - Bad Mineralization

If memory is correct I belive we did something to the soil there. Im thinking August 1945 was when it happened. USA back to back World WAR CHAMPS!

Went back out and tried again with settings noted above by Randy and a few other folks; although I found a few more targets - nothing special - I had to work VERY hard to hear the good stuff through all of the ground noise. Deepest find was about 4 inches. Lots of conductive targets such as aluminum, nails and screw caps, but not too many low conductive signals. At one point - in AUTO +3 - the detector was running at 4 with a recommended setting of 1! I was able to get the sensitivity up to 13 for a while, but again, the ground noise was killing me. As much as I hate to say it, I think my beach detecting days here are numbered.

Wow auto +3 =4 is awful! Wonder if taking a 100 mile drive would improve conditions in soil, or 10 miles. Are those soil conditions localized to your specific location maybe with other areas nearby being better possibly? Also I wondrous if you have a problem with your coil?? Too bad you don't have a buddy nearby with same detector so you could compare coil capabilities. Are any dealers near you that might let you try a different coil? I hope so, because its easy to see how frustrating hunting would be in your conditions! Good luck to you Shayne!

There are NO metal detector dealers in Japan - detecting is not a hobby here. That alone leads me to believe that there are a TON of great finds waiting for me to dig them. I haven't completely given up yet - I am in the process of trying to find a lightly used pro-coil that I can purchase for comparison. My coil is the original one and it is about 3 years old - but it has been well maintained. I have to admit, I have never had the same confidence in my current pro-coil that I had in my eTrac coil. Reading posts here in the forum, I never really got the same depth that some of the other detectorists were talking about - just assumed it was my ground in VA. Now that I am experiencing such difficulty here in Japan, I essentially have three options; buy a new CTX3030, buy an new coil or send the detector back to Minelab and have them test everything. I have to admit - the CTX3030 is basically a small computer - why didn't Minelab build in a capability to remotely access the individual detector through the Xchange 2 software application? Just plug in your detector, login, click a button that says something like - DIAGNOSTIC SCAN - and a few minutes later you receive a health report. Given the number of these machines that require warranty repair, can you imagine how much money that capability would save Minelab in shipping alone - not to mention technician labor hours. RANDY - if you are reading this post - pass this recommendation to Minelab; as I would be first in line to download the associated firmware upgrade!

If metal detecting hasn't really been a hobby over there, you could try a different method.

Just swing your detector slow like you would anywere, and if someone is watching "pretend" to pinpoint.
Then just cut a plug and dig down 6", and swish around with a pinpointer to see if anything.

Odds may be in your favor and actually do pretty good.

I passed it on, along with a link to your post. Thanks. HH Randy

Shayne that is an outstanding suggestion and thoughts on your part! Man that would really be a great feature to have available and I sure hope it can be implimented....I hope Minelab scratches their head and thinks "Wow why didn't WE think of that! (Assuming they haven't but possibly they did).

Randy thanks for forwarding the suggestion to minelab, I'll be in line right behind you guys to get hooked up with that capability.

I have often wondered what hidden menus (which may contain data like this) there are on the CTX... I have tried to find any mention of them on line but so far nothing... I think it was the etrac that had a diagnostic type screen for a while.. Maybe the Explorer... Can't remember now..
