Detecting since 1966

In 1966 I walked into a Hobby Shop in North Dakota and asked what that thing was on the wall. The clerk took it outside and we put a coin on the ground and the machine beeped. I was hooked from that moment on. I recently purchased a Garrett ATPRO and am anxious to use it. I have been reading the forum for several months now. What a Great Bunch of People. Anyway, glad to be here.

Welcome! Hope you enjoy the AT Pro, It's a great little detector. Looking forward to seeing your treasures!!

Yeah! Glad to have you in our fellowship, great helpful posters here!

From the land of the Bluenose.....nice to meet another old timer. This is my 41st year atth hobby and I too have the Pro. Can't even recall the model type of my first machine. Best of the season to youz and the brood me bouy!

Thank you for the kind words. That first detector was an old Whites. I also have a Gold Bug 2 along with the ATPRO that I just purchased. One thing I really need to say about getting into this
45+ years ago was what it was actually like. I remember first going to a park and no one, and I mean NO ONE could have ever detected there before; I found so many indian head pennies, buffalo nickels, halves, and silver dollars. At that time I was only 19 years old and I really didn't know what I had ahold of. I thought I would always find that amount of coins everywhere but as the years went by.....well, it sort of diminished. But, those places are still there: we just have to find them! It's not what we had, or what we have, it's really the ANTICIPATION of what we are going to get that keeps us swinging!!

Welcome, I think you made a great choice with the ATPro! I can only imagine the fantastic things you have found over the years, it must have been amazing to have every spot be a virgin spot!! Do you have a favourite find from over the years?

Probably a favorite find would be a gold ring that I found for a lady; I just remember how much she appreciated it! The anticipation, the beep, and then the digging are what it's all about. What a GREAT SPORT and a GREAT WAY TO STAY IN SHAPE!

Dan youl Like the AT-Pro it has Fast Recovery in Por mode, Accept all N listen, Welcom, I starter this Great Hobby in 1988 , Mickfin

Just Wondering...I know some of the videos and literature suggest learning the ATPRO in "pro" mode and others don't; what do you suggest for a beginner with this machine? I'm going to be starting the learning curve over the Christmas holiday.

Standard mode is more like the Ace 250, the pro mode is much more advanced. I found the Pro mode easy to learn, and lots of fun. My advice would be to start with Pro mode, it is awesome...

I run my AT settings: Pro Mode custom, max sensitivity, nothing notched out, Iron discrimination 35, and Iron Audio Off. I turn the Iron Audio back ON when I want to further investigate an iffy signal. My soil typically balances at around 80-82, and I usually detect areas that have some iron junk. This setup works great for me...

Wow---what an awesome machine, the ATPRO . Going to take it out tomorrow for the maiden voyage. I am excited!!!!! I'll let you know what happens.

The ATPRO is teaching me. Took it out yesterday for awhile and found 3 pennies and an iron bottle cap. I'm starting to get the hang of it but sure seems easier right now in Standard Mode. Several times I had readings of between 80 and 90 with a high tone, and when I went back over the spot there were no more high tones...only iron (low) tones. My question is: is it normal to get high tones and then you immediately go back over the spot and only get low tones??????

Snowy weather and cold here in Boise; can't wait til the ground thaws a little to be able to go again. What a great hobby this is!!!!

Hi Dan, I bought a Whites Spectrum back in 91, and in 93 got hooked on a boat, and fishing, got married, boat went away in 06, and in June of this year dusted off the old detector and started up again. I'm having a blast, but am finding the Spectrum rather heavy for a day of swinging. I am 3/4 of the way there for an AT Pro myself, hope to be ordering it within the next two weeks. Keep posting maybe you can help me with my learning curve LOL. Actually several of these posts have been educating. Good luck, and hapy hunting. Artie

Hey Artie--I am happy with the ATPRO. Years ago when I got into this I also had Whites Detectors. I too got into fishing with the boat and hunting, etc., etc. I've caught a million slime rockets (fish), and I think everyone has seasons in their life; I still enjoy fishing but it just seemed like a good time to get back into detecting. I purchased a Gold Bug 2 for the gold up here in the mountains, but that is of little use when the mountains get socked in with snow and ice. Did alot of research and pretty much decided that the ATPRO was a great coin/relic machine that I could use almost all year round. I belong to a metal detector club (Boise Basin Search and Recovery) and one of the guys who detects alot said that his next machine would be the ATPRO----so I got one. Good Luck on what you get and have fun!!

Well, seems like there is an inch or so of the white stuff out there here in Boise; Good Time to read more posts and watch more videos about the ATPRO. I know there are no correspondence courses in swimming but until the ground unthaws that's all I can do; I sure do enjoy reading all the posts! Happy New Year!!

I have to say welcome first, and congratulations on your purchase of your AT PRO.
So you started detecting the year I was born. Like you said, you had a huge advantage
finding silver at that time, because that was the common coin in circulation at the time. I'm
sure in 1966 silver coins could be picked out of every other hand full of coins. HH we will all look
forward to seeing your finds and leaning on you for your years of knowledge.

George
