Detecting newbie

If there is a metal detector club within driving distance, you may want to go meet up and see some of the detectors that people use and maybe get a feel for a particular model.

Jetman, I think your idea on the two Fishers is excellent. It would be nice to know
the frequencies of the F2 & F4, but their ads don't offer that info. If they are the
same freq's then you two will have to stay a distance apart while searching
together as I said before. As far as the small Gold & coins question they should both be
about the same. If one is a higher freq., then it will do a bit better on Gold than
the lower freq., which will be better on the high conductive coins(except for
nickels & zincs). Those Fishers are Dave Johnson designs and are
for sure very "state of the art" excellent units.

P.S. One of the best features of these two is they both have 4-TONE ID as
well as visual meter ID. Great target info!

A CZ3D would be great, if i could get one "used" or something. She will more than likely get a F-2, ease of use, it will work for her. this all great info guys/gals!

Monitor Ebay the Fisher metal detector category if you see a CZ5 for 400.00 or below buy it.It may take a week or two.By the way if you don't like it you'll make a couple of bucks.

I pulled the trigger on a CZ3D about ten minutes ago......the F2 is going to be my wifes/backup! I cant wait to see it in the box. I am going to try it in my backyard first. Then its into the field!

With both you and your wife using these units let us know.your progress and what you like or dislike about each detector.Be careful with your digging in the parks. The backyard is a great place to start, which you can repair your ground while learning how to pinpoint.Use the smallest digging tool possible most coins are 5-7 inches deep.I have found Indian Head pennies in rocky soil only 2-3 inches deep.Suggestion old city parks will usually produce good finds.

thanks, most of the are where i live was inhabited by some civil war era folk. anywhere you go down here you have a good chance that there was either A. a battle fought near by, or B. people were marching/living there. a lot of the reason for bying a detector was to rehabilitate my knee as i mangled it all up while in the service. i think that this will prove to be a good buy as a i am watching my doorstep everyday!

The reason I suggest a park they give you a variety of targets and probably the best way to hone your skills. Most of my park hunts I'll go home with a nice old silver coin and there's a good chance to find a nice gold ring. The CZ3D will work very well with the new trash in the salt mode. Again Good Luck.
