Detecting gold jewelry/Am i doing this right????

bob.oz, you're always going to wonder now about that park because where there is lots of junk in the ground there were lots of people there. And yes, there is a good chance there are gold rings there. Seems that gold and junk go hand in hand. Take Tom's advice about finding a place that is more likely to have gold with less junk.

However, there is nothing wrong with going to you're park and picking out a likely area to hunt. Start thinning out the junk a little at a time and concentrate on the better signals.....when you have the spare time to spend. Eventually your persistence may pay off and that park might start to give up some jewelry - if you want to put in the time and effort.

Just remember that if you disc out foil you will miss small size gold rings including most ladies and girls sized rings.

Good luck and Happy Hunting!

I agree with Tom in CA. One needs to carefully choose where to look for gold jewelry. 30 yr's ago the junk wasn't too bad. Not that much aluminum. Now days, its horrible. At the end of the day, I want something besides a pouch full of trash. Must be at least 10,000 bits of aluminum to 1 piece of gold jewelry in certain areas. I won't waste my time playing those odds. I'd rather cherry-pick for silver in those kind of areas.

"TerraDigger" Where my Brother is talking about getting that ring if you remember I stated "He had to dig a lot of beaver tail pull-rings" well those were in use from 1965 to 1975! that means the main problem trash in that park is really the modern stuff, its the 30 years ago trash.
Now that's not to say there isn't a fair amount of modern trash, but the real problem trash in the park (our park) are those darn "Pull & Toss rings"
Now they are other places around here where the modern trash is like what your talking about, but in most of those places there isn't any OLD coins.

For 2011 I found,
3 silver dimes,
1 silver quarter,
1 Indian Head penny,
1 Silver charm,
30 Wheat pennies

But. I only logged 9 hunts! so I didn't get to hunt hardly at all!

I logged a total of 259 coins.

With park/rec centers being extremely plentiful in my area, and the fact that they are used year round(Florida)by all, they tend to be one of my go to spots when i do a quick hunt.I like the parks for the many interesting finds that are dug..the thought of finding the elusive gold piece is always in the back of my mind while i pass over the tids that may be just that...and being that i repeatedly return to these "well used, well hunted"parks,i will still dig a number of those "iffy" tids that are in most cases, junk.

The hobby of MDing is LUCK.sure you can do your homework and figure sites that have a higher probability of better targets, which is just what most of you are saying, but it still comes down to someones "bad luck" and your "good luck"...nobody knows were their going to lose an item, and you in turn, don't know when or were your going to find it...If i was out there trying to make a living out of this hobby it would not be the as much fun,the fact that you don't know what your going to find or were your going to find it just adds to the excitement. The pull tabs, aluminum scrap, and other junk are always going to be a nuisance that you have to deal with,so divide and conquer!!...good luck:HH bob.oz

Im glad I read this thread. Ive been hunting for thirty years but never had anybody teach me. People want me to teach them. I almost always start out digging everything , because that is how you find gold.I usually dont do that for long , as I get tired of digging aluminum.

You have to learn to dig the "right" trash targets at the "right" location. The picture depicts the jewelry finds from 6 hunts this year.

The 10KT ring on the left with the missing stone, I found exactly where I expected to find one.
The .585 ring with the three diamonds I found where I expected to find one.
The 10KT Topaz I found where I expected to find one.
Same with the silver.

I found these items not because I dug a bunch of trash, but because I had learned "where" to dig "what" range of trash. I have learned to get better answers to why I find what I find where I find it.

Everyone wants someone to tell them where to go find a ring. That isn't what you need. What you need is the magic formula. What you need to learn is the answer to; "why you find what you find where you find it".

Every detector has the capablity to find gold. But some are more efficient at it than others.

The majority of my gold finds have come in at the ptab or lower signal.Knocking out pulltabs really depends on where you are.If I'm overwhelmed with low signals in a park I might dig them till I'm tired of digging them and then ignore them.On a beach or volleyball court I will not only dig all pulltab signals, but also all foil signals down to zero vdi. Here is a gold beach find from last saturday that came in as a foil signal and vdi'd at 8.Please note that it had a good, solid repeatable tone. One carat of diamonds,4.5 grams 10k gold.

This a motivational poster I made a couple of years ago. (Actual finds) Yes, you have to dig a lot of trash but the rewards are out there. Have fun and dig.

For me the above picture says it all. Thanks Larry

Had no work today,so i told myself i was going MDing and was going to find a gold ring!!....Found a silver chain instead....guess i wasn't listening!
Ive been hitting this soccer field for some time, and swear I'm the only one,I do find something every time, not just coins.today i was digging low tids that were in the pull tab to nickle range, and the occasional quarter...Ive find new and old clad,(not silver), here along with the jewelry, which up to today include:10k Chanel bracelet,Figaro 14k bracelet,2 silver rings( a Tiffany "Atlas" ring, and a Mercedes ring...and this 20" silver chain today.Ill find the gold next time,at least that's what i tell myself!.....HH bob.oz

I was beginning to feel like I was the only one....

The bad part of MD ing is both of these sound and look the same on my BH 505. I put my ring in a hole and covered it up just to test things out , when I swing the coil over it sounds just like a pull tab.

Dig it all!

Yep! that gold ring will sound like a lot of things in that zone,
Nickles,
your square tab,
the older beaver tail pull rings,
ect...
When the gold gets a little smaller like a ladies ring will be getting down to the foil range.
And then you have the problem with tiny gold links chains, few metal detector will hit on them at all!

Gold, is a problem to hunt because its in the a main area of the trash range. So, if you want to find gold you can count on luck! or dig a LOT of junk.
The coin hunters of the past (many of them) would run the discrimination on their detectors just above nickles, leaving a lot of the gold. But in the late 70's those pull & Toss pull rings were EVERYWHERE! you could pick up a couple of thousand of them or more before you would pick up a small piece of gold jewelry. That meant you could hunt within a twenty square foot area for HOURS! and you would come out with two copper pennies and two hundred and eighty four pull rings, then it was time to go home!
Those square tabs are a problem, but noting like those pull & toss rings were! what a nightmare.
