Detecting after hip/ knee replacement

I had my total left hip replacement in Feb. 1996. In 2001 I went in the hospital for my right hip replacement with a revision. I am now about to turn 65 this coming month. Knock on wood, I get around good. I had a great surgeon in Atlanta. He specialized in sports medicine, and he was the Dr. that did Bo Jackson's hip surgery. As long as your Mom has a good surgeon and she does like she's supposed to in her rehab, she will do fine. I wish her all the best. I meant to add that I am retired from the Fire Dept. I had 16 years in when I had my first hip replaced. I would work another 10 years with the Dept. before retirement, 8 of those years I was still on the truck and fighting fire. The Dr.'s know their stuff, and again, I know your Mom will come out find from her surgery. (y)

Knock on wood I’m still fully mobile at 66. 35 total years in Law Enforcement put a day to day weight on me that more hit my lower back than my hips. I used to be able to squat down and dig but cant stay that way now for more than a minute so its down to both knees and then back up. I’ve never had surgery so I cant answer that but I have been around a couple friends who have and like Confetrit said, if you pay attention to orders and do the rehab honestly you will burning up those fields and lawns in no time.

I have been detecting since 1975 and am I am now 82 I had five total knee replacements starting in 1988 through 1998. I wasn't able to kneel down and dig a target, until I discovered the gel knee pads. Now not much stops me from getting out. Like the others have said, do the rehab as planed and you should be fine to go for many years.

I thought I was going to have to give up detecting 5 years ago because of my knees, couldn't stand to kneel down and uneven ground tore me up. Had both knees replaced and did the rehab like I was instructed and now am as good as I was 20 years ago.

The reason I cant get out like I did before is I had both knees total replaced at the same time about 3 or 4 years ago and went to the rehab and I can get down, but getting up is tough and when I do I seem to fall over most of the time. I am at 73 and seem to fall over a lot as my balance it not too good anymore a few year ago I had 2 heart attacks and a tripple bypass so it seem my wife and kids dont want me to go too far away by myself.
My knees dont bother me while working at my bar I own, just when I get down on my knees and try to get up I almost have to find something I can grab on to pull myself up.

yea, at 68 I have some minor knee and back issues, but my bigger problem is arthritis in my hands, especially the thumbs. tried many different medicines and rubs (Deep Blue seems to work best), but seems when I take enough to remove the pain, the thumbs hurt worse when the meds wear off. I have a bad feeling that this will be my reason to stop swinging the machine at some point down the road. As it is, I use my fingers to hold the machine, with a really loose thumb hold. Sometimes I have to attach the old 'Swingy Thingy' to get me through the days hunt.

Rick,
I had a similar problem. What I did was modify an adjustable long handled shovel by removing the shovel head (they come with many different tool heads) and installing a hand trowel head. This way I can dig the plug standing up, then kneel down on one knee (on a jell knee pad),to retrieve the target To get up I use the long handle digger as a support.

After reading all these posts I feel your pain. I'm 67 and this hobby keeps us going. In pain but the exercise we need. Thinking about digging that gold coin or ring is good for the soul but pain for the body. Keep going mates!

Coffeecan, A Big Welcome to the forum from Georgia. Yes sir, we only go around once in this worldly life, so we have to keep going and do the best we can. I just turned 65 and I Thank the Good Lord everyday for allowing me to get around as well as I do. You don't have to look long and hard to find folks that are a lot worse off than we are.

Amen.
