Depthmeter on XS question

I have been swinging the XS for 2 months now and learning every day with tips from the forums and I still cant seem to get the depth meter to read accuratly, it seems like deeper targets (ie 6" or more) are dead on but shallow clads and pennys are very irratic and seem to show on the depth at half way or more instead of the top when they are at 2 or 3 inches,is there a trick to getting an accurate depth on the meter?

To be honest Garry, in that range I usually figure out depth w/ my X-1 probe.
If it's a shallow target like you mentioned, the X-1 will detect it and allow me to pinpoint it EXACTLY. I then just us a small knife type probe and pluck it out of the ground - no digging required. This method works up to about 2" on dimes and 2-3" w/ a quarter. If I get lazy, I take my digging tool and just pop a shovel-wide plug and grab it that way.
I tried the same method w/ a White's and it was just not exact enough on the shallow targets....and the Minelab was the same way until I got better at pinpointing.
If you're not in the mood for an X-1, I would suggest pinpointing the object - and then SLOWLY rescan that spot. You may even want to plant a few coins in your yard to test things out there...
Good luck,
~Tim

I have the X1 wouldnt know how to hunt without it now, It is the bother when I am working parks to passup the shallows that are 98% clad and keep looking for the deeper ones that drives me crazy,I am upgraded from a Garrett and it read depth to perfection,with this being my only problem and the gains I have made with the XS I am a happy camper.after 2 months I am up to 33 silver coins in the same places I hunted with the garrett best find an 1874 SL half at 11" :~}
