Depth for CZ6a

I have 2 CZ6a.

Air tested a penny, both at 9".

But in the ground, both got only 6" .

Max sensitivity, 0 discrimination, ground balanced. Non-mineralized soil/sod.

Is this normal? I've read they should go down 9-11" in the ground??

Hey Ken , I have a silver dime at 8 inches that comes in great ! ........ now...... but as a fresh buried coin , it was very iffy at best . I do value my test garden. I have also noticed when we have had a dry spell, the targets are more difficult. Moisture seems to give targets better conductive properties. HH Tony

No one can make a blanket statement that x-detector should do x-inches in any ground.

As with every detector made, it completely depends on factors like the ground mineralization, moisture content, EMI, etc.
Any mineralization in the ground will eat the depth.

Here is Colorado, this is a typical problem. (depth issues)
Back in states like Illinois and Indiana, not so much. (very good depth)
There are areas in states like Florida have no mineralization at all. (maximum depth similar to air tests)

You can check with your local detecting club to get a feel for the general ground conditions in your area, but it sounds like mineralization might be the culprit.

Try running your sensitivity at about 4. Often get better depth than at full sensitivity.

There are variances between units the deepest and most sensitive detector I ever had was a CZ6a it was deeper than a sovereign sold it to Dan in PA years ago still haven't found one to come close to it. Check with NASA Tom he's the guru he tunes them and there are serial numbers that are better than others . He could tell you weather it's worth getting tuned.

Find better depth with different Detectors I've had that
get better depth on old dark soils
that have never been resodded

That sounds weak to me, especially if you maxed out the sensitivity. Fresh buried coins don’t respond the same as stuff that has been buried for years . My Cz 5 with sensitivity 4, disc zero , volume under red zone for modulation. GB and it hits silver dime at 8 inches with room to spare. In my test garden HH Tony

I find if i ground balance a hair positive it helps with mine. Also, I run it 2-4 max, generally on sensitivity. Any higher seems to
not do as good. 0 disc. avoids rusty nails and such falseing as coins. I dig 8 inch Canadian clad dimes regularly...and the odd 9-10 inchers. I use the 8" coil.
Never have been able to find 10.5 inch one.

Another thing to keep in mind about the depth you achieve when testing "pennies" in the soil. Today's pennies are made of a zinc alloy and the pennies when a CZ was manufactured were made of a copper alloy. Try your ground test with a copper Lincoln penny... I think you might see an increase in the depth that you are able to detect the penny.
