Deep thoughts...

Hi all !

I've been using a Minelab Sovereign GT for 5 months now, mainly in the "reverse disc" mode, to my entire satisfacton;

Searching in all metal (pinpoint) gives great depth, but the gold rings I find are a bit...uh...light . Mostly wedding bands.

I was thinking of more depth, an option being to get me a 15" WOT coil.

The othe option being to buy a waterproof PI unit. That would enlarge my hunting fields...

So, has anybody used both PI and Sovereign? Is it really that deep? Used C Scope 6 PI for a while, but was not impressed by depth and overall sensitivity to gold).

Living in Europe, I have only limited choice of PI units, Whites surfmaster series, Garrett, Tesoro, etc.

Thank you for sharing your experience in that matter.

Get yourself a Dual Field from Whites... I use the DF in the wet sand and water and save my GT for the wet sand infested with iron...

The Excal being a waterproof Sov., I can give you a pretty accurate comparision between the two units. I like the feedback from the Excal as it is so good at eliminating ferrous targets but for depth I have to say that the Dually will take you at least several inches deeper, especially if the ground is mineralized. I am fortunate to have extremely low mineralization in Bermuda but when I have hunted off-island in Mexico I found that the Dually went substantially deeper, 4" to 6" deeper at a guess as I didn't run accurate trials.
Naturally you can expect to dig a lot more holes and deeper holes too, if you are swinging the PI unit - so be prepared for an extra workout.

Cheers,

I changed from the 6 pi to a whites pi pro and noticed a good improvement in depth Nick. Don't know where you are digging in Europe, But i have a lot of Beach's in the UK where every ring is lightweight, 2-3 gram being average! But if you think back to the early 80's when ratner took over most of the high street jewelers, quality dropped of the scale. Still remember his infamous quote " that he sells gold earrings for the price of a prawn sandwich only the sandwich lasts longer!" Up to a couple years ago i sold jewelery at the big coastal markets , but sold very little gold, 9 out of 10 sales were silver or body piercings stuff like belly bars, did seem to sell quite a few toe rings as well. Good luck with the digging mate

Well thanks for thr reactions.

Unfortunately, I just notice the dual field sufmaster isn't available in continental europe. We have just "PI PRO WADER and PI PRO DIVER. Are they as good as the dual field PI?

The wet beaches here are packed with iron but some places are workable. Any improvement for depth on ring shaped targets would be welcome, I noticed that larger coils add impressive depth to...SILVER rings, none ore few to gold rings.

My CS6PI was not responding to rather heavy gold chains. Would whites PI unit do the job?

Thank you all.

You could order from UK, ebay.uk and many other places, most of the Uk shops will send to europe, i get all my stuff from there sent to Spain

Hi ashmonkey, what happened to beachdetecting.co.uk ? its been in maintainence mode for months,any way to get in touch with toddy

Thanks all for the input;

Got family in Kent, so I would eventually buy one in the UK, but I also read good comments on the PI PRO. No field tests to be found for the dual field, am I right about this?

I will try to be able to test one (PI PRO) before making a decision, because I am still not convinced it is deeper than the Sovereign in the Pinpoint mode. Getting 14 to 15 inches on coin/ring sized targets, deeper with faint threshold changes.

Another reason to buy such a detector is i want to go into water, and I do not like the Excals.

Nick,
I have two PI's for the wet sand and wading: Goldquest SS and Garrett Infinium. The infinium works great in the water and has good depth. I find the Goldquest SS to be my main choice to swing in the knee deep up the shore to the dry sand. It is very sensitive to small gold and will go deeper than I care to dig. The SS model won't cut out iron, but it's ability to find the gold out ways this (besides I generally dig it all). It is light and comes with a standard 11" coil. Not may people seem to talk much about them on this forum, and I'm glad! I use the GT for the dry stuff where I can weed thru the trash better! The proof is in the finds! You can't hardly find a used one, because they hang on to them and that should tell you something. Just my opinion! Sandmagnet
