Dealer Hype ???

what really is going on on the detector market. Your answer is right on the money Ralph.
Some guys just don't understand that you don't need the very deepest or most expensive detector to find stuff. They don't even know what a small coil is good for. Garrett named the 4.5 coil "sniper"....once you use one you know why. Sure the Ace 250 is no Explorer, X5, Tejon, DFX but is has about 80% the depth compared to the deepest and if you put the sniper on it the Ace can do magic in trash.

I think the point is that some guys are just jealous what the Ace does for 200 $. They think a 200$ detector can't be that good.
But it is not just the detector....good detector + good spot + good user = many finds.

HH,
Andy

Lots of 250's on e-bay huh...Yea, most are new sales from
detector companies. When I bought my 250, I checked e-bay
for used units, as I'm a cheap bastard and am always looking
to save a lil $$$$. How many used units were there on e-bay
when I looked about 3 weeks ago?
One. And it was already up to about 165 bucks and climbing.
I decided to just buy a new one being it wasn't much more
dough..
Sure, with all the hype and comments about the ace line, I
could see a few skeptics pipe up. Nothing unusual. And I
don't have any problem with them. It's a free country.
But.. This dude is bordering on calling you a liar. :(
I think part of the problem is some don't realize that
the "big" hauls that some people get around here are as
much owner prowess, as it is the machine. Heck, the best
machine in the west is going to fall short if you detect
in the wrong places every day. You would probably still
find the rings with another machine as long as it was a
decent one... :/
Speaking of depth... I was yakking with a friend of mine
about detectors in general. He doesn't have one, but a
friend of his does, and is supposeded to be a fairly
high end model. Anyway, one comment my friend made, was
that his friend mentioned that in general, you pay appx
$100 for every inch of depth. I don't know how accurate
this is, and maybe obsolete...?? But, if that gauge of
price vs depth were true, the ace 250 should only be good
for about 2 inches... Of course, we all know it's good for
about 4 times that much in many cases, depending on the coil.
At even a high price, I'd consider the ace's as fairly decent
depth. You can spend 4 times as much as not get too much more.
But for the actual price, I find it hard to complain about
too much about depth being it's an appx 7-8 inch machine with
the stock coil. Sure, some may go deeper. But for $200?
I won't be holding my breath waiting. :/

Bingo.

All too often it amounts to someone playing the role of puppet while someone else is pulling the strings. There have even been a few times that I've had to resist others trying to pull "MY" strings. But I'm not sure that is the case in this instance, as the more I read into the messages, the more obvious it became that I was dealing with someone totally unaware of the concept of notch discrimination. This particular gent apparently thought that in order to find "ALL GOLD" (read "any gold"), you had to dig pull-tabs. Most of us are aware that is simply not the case with a good notch discrimination detector. You will miss the ones that read the same on the discrimination or segment scale as a pull-tab of course, but there are many gold rings that fall well below the tab range. So I think this gent was simply familiar only with progressive discrimination, and totally missed the concept of notch discrimination somewhere along the line. I did end up identifying him from his PM and doing a search on his other posts on various forums, and his inexperience level became very obvious very quick. His biggest beef seemed to be his purchase of a much higher priced detector that went bad after only a weeks usage, and had to be sent back to the repair center for repairs. I think maybe the idea had crossed his own mind that just maybe "HE" himself was feeling a bit dissed or "ripped off" once he started reading about the Ace machines. Perhaps he was trying to convince himself more than he was really trying to convince me. But considering the machine in question (his) and it's track record as being a problem in the target-masking category, I can understand his disillusion and perhaps even his personal anger once reality struck. Obviously I used the XXXXX to keep from causing him too much embarassment, but it really wouldn't take much reading of the forums to discover who he really is. Hopefully he spends a little more time reading, learning, and understanding instead of striking out at others in ignorance, which alot of times I think really is the case.

.....there are much higher priced machines on the market that don't give you nearly "AS MUCH" as the Ace 250. I sometimes wonder if old Charlie is trying to pull off some kind of coup...... ;)

Ralph

We must all remember Charlie didn't fall off a turnip wagon yesterday. He is after all an aerospace engineer who originally designed guidance systems for space vehicles. He can probably do more tricks on a stack of circuit boards than a monkey can do on a hundred yards of grapevine.

Since when did you get so sweet. Is this the same Ralph I've known for many moons or are you a clever impostor?

I am relativty new to the metal detecting hobby and i say hobby i got in to this to have FUN i havent found anything worth while yet but am having a ball its a lot like when i go fishing usually dont catch any fish but i went fishing same thing with metal detecting when it seases to be fun they are all for sale i also have a 250

I guess I'm just "mellowing" in my old age.

Where are you hunting, in a vacuum? :) There are coins everywhere, even if you only find a few. Americans lose on an average $300 million in coins every year. You said you haven't found anything worth while. What have you found? Give us a clue and we'l try to help you out. The detector you have is an absolute coin magnet.
