Ive been a land man for 33 yrs ,i was at the beach in Delaware this summer and found a navigational device from the 1700s with my cz70pro ,i was searching for gold and 1/2 cent pieces, after 3 days of hard hunting i did not find any ,after finding that piece,i found a new interest water hunting . i am a fisher guy with cz70pro and f75 and just wondering weather the cz21 8 or 10 or the excall 11 8 or 10 coil, is for me ,i plan on hunting beach, surf up to neck , I traded the navigational device to Dale at the musium in Fenwick for a king george 11 1/2 cent 1747 since i had the hots to find those 1/2 cent pieces ,so can anyone help me deside on the machine for me ?

I own a Excalibur with a 10 inch coil and was told by Gulf Hunter to buy the Excalibur with an 8 in coil and wish I had listened. The eight inch is lighter, easier to swing in the water and on dry land and they say easier to pin point with. An Excalibur is a great machine, I cant comment as opposed to CZ21 as i have never used one.

the 8" coil much better in water..and found the Excal was a bit deeper than the CZ21..they are both great detectors but i like the Excal ll 8" much better.the CZ's tend to like Iron where the Excal null's on iron..iv NEVER dug not 1 nail or bobbi pin with the Excal.

new to water - good luck neck deep with recovery - unless you are in a lake with zero swell.

As Gerry mentioned the Excal II.......
Things to keep in mind which ever direction you choose.

If you are spending most or planning to spend most of your detecting in the deep water an 8 inch coil is what you will want. It is much easier to control with the surf and tide. Pinpointing is much faster as well.

The two products mentioned are very good products, But the Excal in my opinion will out perform the cz-21 in the north east beach's.

Got Both 8 and the 10..Both excellent machines...My first choice is the 8.....Only a seasoned CZ20 Pro match the excal's Strengths...Good Luck.....Joe

Gerry,Bling,Barryny, and JoeofSouth Jersey ,thanks i would like the answer to one more? I like a machine that stays out of the shop which is more dependable cz21 or excall11

My Excalibur has been good, I only have about 70 hrs or so but it seems sturdy. I really don't want to get into how it happened but I ran over my Excal with my Dodge PU fortunately over the edge of the coil.:rage: It was enough weight to really push the bottom half of the machine into the soft sand and it still works great.

This is a razor type question.

It really depends on user......I have seen detectors go south in days, and I have seen them last 10 years.
Most of the time if there is going to be a real failure it will be in the first months of use.

Question should be.....which is more reliable? cost of repairs? Warranty?

These are the questions I would think are better too ask.

With these questions I would answer Minelab.......The excalibur has many years of customer abuse under its belt.

Yeah...Excal 2 for me. My machine has paid for itself several times over now....I use the 10 inch but I hear a lot of people prefer the 8 for seperation. Buy one and come out to play. You wont regret it!

I have owned both units and prefer the Excal. Wish I had bought the 8" on the CZ though, as I'm sure it would have been a better performer. The CZ loves iron more than the Excal. Excals HATE iron and I love that about it.

Well here comes the naysayer!!!! I love my CZ's!! Wouldn't change them for an excal!! I dive in Mi lakes and LOVE the fact that I can hear boats when they come close. I also seem to do dang good with my CZ's as I find more gold in Mi lakes than all my friends. With that said, To each their own. You haver a LOT of great seasoned detectorists here and a lot are stuck in our ways!! Also to me iron targets especially the larger ones are fun. I have 4 pistols, numerous tools, old license plates and plenty of boat anchors digging iron!!.

So whatever you decide. LEARN your machine and have fun and DON"T expect gold everytime you go out. Well I can because I know where it is!!! And BOTH my CZ-21's have the 10" coil. I wish I had an 8" only for knocking over underwater weeds while I play but since I am completly underwater I have NO problem swining my 10" ones.

Good luck and enjoy!

I have been beach hunting since 1979. I have had 3 Excal's and 3 CZ-20's. They are both great machines, and I love the both for different reasons. I feel that the CZ's will go deeper, but I love the coverage of the Double-D coils on the Excal. The CZ's love deep iron. If you are metal detecting a beach with a lot of black sand, I would go with the Excal, if you are going to be detecting a beach with clean sand, go with the CZ. This question has been asked on the forums many, many times, and you will get opinions from people who have only used one brand, and swear by that particular machine. There both great machines for different reasons, and once you learn the machine, which ever one you choose, you should do great with it. Good luck

you might want to consider the whites for this area of the bay, most of the beaches here are old some of them have been in use since before 1900. I consistently find silver dated mid to late 1800s

1seeker,

Congratulations on the find of the navigational device. I have been out there as well and have never found one of the pennies, however, I did find a small copper "slug" which could have been something at one point (could not see any markings whatsoever).

What did the navigational device look like? Was it iron? A lot of detectorists leave iron after they use disc mode on the excal.

I have the Excal 800 (8 inch coil). Works great in Jersey. I see more 10" coils out there, but from a previous post, most prefer the 8".
