CZ-5 and Cibola comparison

Hi Jerry!

I was hoping you'd respond this this post, because I always wondered why some of your responses on the Metal Detector Reviews were so short, for example "the Cibola goes Deeeeeeep.." or for the CZ-5 "...not as deep as the Cibola". Thanks for solving the mystery of the blunt messages!

Based on what you and BarnacleBill has said, adding a CZ-5 to my collection doesn't sound like a bad thing.

But now that I know you own the CZ-7Pro what is your opinion on this machine. I know from one of Tom's previous pots that he preferred the CZ-5 over the CZ-7Pro because he felt there was too much of a limited range in the sensitivity adjustment obtainable due to the digital control (Tom, if you're listening I hope I quoted you properly?). Have you had similar problems using the CZ-7PRO?

Do you find with that you can get along WITHOUT the CZ-5 now having the CZ-7Pro or is there some things the CZ-5 does better than the CZ-7PRO to make you want to keep both of them?

And one more last question, how do both the CZ-5 and CZ-7Pro do on rusty bottle caps?

Thanks!

Hello GT
I'll have to get back to you on the Cz-70, I have just acquired it and haven't had it in the field yet. I would imagine alot of Cz users like the analog meter better on the other CZ's. I got the Cz-70 from Dan (PA) for a Cz-6a, who is very profecient with Cz's. I guess he likes the analog meter better., but there is other guys who like digital. I'm hoping that the newer technology helps with the iron handling ability of the machine, but I doubt there is much difference. The fourth tone may be a good feature but yet to be determined. If I had to guess , I will probally be using the Cz-5 more, I have alot of confidence in it. i don't dig nails anymore with it, and can dig coins all day long at 8". If you get a Cz, be sure and get a 5" coil for picking out goodies in trashy areas.

I have only been detecting for only a year and have dug these nickels with only a minor Pulltab bother. I don't think there is another machine that is even close on nickels.. All these nickels gave High coin tone and all but about 3 locked on to nickel segment, a few bounced from foil to nickel. Dig any foil to nickel bounce.

First go look at this post I did awhile back, http://www.findmall.com/read.php?35,189919,189919#msg-189919

Keep in mind my CZ20 = CZ5 in salt mode. Bcaps vary in composition and age(rust) plays a part. The Bcap in my previous post has a foil insert which = big trouble. Just look at he Excel ID numbers and you can see why.

Newer Bcaps have foil inserts and many appear to have a flash deposition of some other conductive metal, depending on brand. I can avoid about 80% of them in the field with the CZ20 using certain techniques. Many times the Bcaps will bounce wildly between 2 or 3 tones, so the target is not locking and has a bit of a spitting characteristic.

I also employ what I believe Monte VB calls "edge pass discrimination", but there is a bit of a fine art to this. Firstly I can run my CZ at max sensitivity "10", others report the same, yet others state "5" is the max for stability. I have not found a solid reason for this.

Running at max sens, if you appproach a large good target that is shallow(i.e. Quarter) say 8 inches horizontal from the coil edge, you will initially get a low tone, then at say 7 inches transition to high tone and a good lock.

But if you have passed over the top of a Bcap and get a mid or high tone, to double check, begin moving the coil away till the target is no longer underneath. At say between 4 inches to 6 inches away you will get a low tone and then no response. It is the wider low tone belt(like rings around Saturn), that help distinguish Bcaps, but this takes practice and becoming one with the machine.

Jerry thanks for the input on the CZs. Guess I'll have to add one to my collection. I'll check back with you later to see how you're feeling about the CZ-7PRO. And for all those OLD NICKELS.....GREAT FINDS!!!

BarnacleBill, your a man of my heart! I really liked the tests your ran on the bottle caps, great work! I wasn't aware that the CZ-20 was like a CZ-5 in salt mode. Maybe I should start checking out the CZ-20 instead since it is good in water too.

You are right about the CZ-5 being hot on iron. The one thing you need to consider is if the areas you will be hunting in are not loaded with iron.I used a white's 6000 di series 2 since 1984,Earlier this year I purchased a new CZ-5,I had to send in back to Fisher for repairs once already. My area is loaded with iron ore and pipeshop soil used to fill in low spaces in peoples yard( this process was used in out area for 90 years until it was stopped by the EPA).It almost impossible to use the CZ-5 in most peoples yards and local parks. The CZ-5 sounds like a machine gun when used!I could not get use to pinpointing either. Its just not right for my area.

Hi Bowtie,

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I just realized you were asking me as well as Bill. I wouldn't have been able to help you with the question. BarnacleBIll said the CZ20=CZ5 in salt mode. From what I've read both machines appear to be very nice and I think you can't go wrong either way.

No Prob GT.It was tough getting so many suggestions.Started wanting cz70pro,then tesoro tiger shark, but heard sand probs.then thought excal or siimilar, figured it would be too much as a first detector.I'm happy with my decision, should be here thur, just in time to goto fl for a week, thanks for response.

Hi Kirk,

BarnacleBill seems to be a knowledgable guy and he owns a CZ-20 and he like his machine alot. I'd say that's a good sign!
