Well the temps reached into the 60's today and I couldn't pass up this great hunting weather. I got off work at 4:30 and headed over to the pounded park. Armed with the 5x8 coil and fresh batteries, I decided to work this trashy hillside that I've hit before. I came across this small patch of eroded hillside and dug a few old trinkets and there wasn't any trash. Every target dug was old. I came across a very small signal at 4". It repeated in both directions and locked on 65 everytime. Normally I wouldn't bother digging a textbook pulltab, but like I said everything in this small patch has been old, so curiosity got the best of me. I dug a 4" plug and couldn't find the target with the pro-pointer. My pro-pointer has seen better days and really should be replaced, but after 10 minutes of checking with the detector and fanning the dirt, I got this small bit. I wiped it off and noticed it was a silver color. Stuck it in front of the coil and waved it back and forth and sure enough, that was my target I was after. I had a feeling it was worn cut silver, but stuck it in my pocket til I could check it at home under the loupe. I hunted for a couple hours and managed 3 wheats, 1 of them is a steel cent found in the hole with a copper wheat.
When I got home I snapped a few pictures of the questionable silver. I checked the thickness with my digital calipers and it is the same thickness as a worn Reale that I found years ago. This piece weighs a mere 0.4 grams. What do you all think?
