Curious About Repairs

 Just curious about something. Have any of you ever paid for a factory tune-up on your detector ? Did the repairman ask you if you were the original owner?:look:

Why do you ask?

tabman

NO and NO.. I have sent in a few tesoros to be tuned or checked out for a minor problem. I have never had a trouble with there service. They will go out of there way to help you anyway they can. It is the best service in the industry. If nothing else, just call them. The lady that answers the phone is very helpful... KEN

 I sent my detector in and got a call back from (anonymous for now) who asked if I was the original owner. I told the truth:surprised: (imagine that) and got charged 50 bucks for a tune-up.:ranting: I was pretty shocked but found out later that Rusty was gone while my detector was being serviced.:rage: I guess that explains it. Anyhow Rusty will know about it soon enough and we will go from there. I bought the detector off Ebay and the person selling it said, " You can send it in to Tesoro for service at no charge". So that's what happened. I am the original owner of my other detectors and always sent in my warranty cards. Hope you guys never run into this problem. :detecting:

I can tell you that frogs can fly, but that doesn't make it so. The lifetime warranty is only for the original purchaser.

What's hard to understand about that?

tabman

Its always been that Tesoro would take care of your detector whether you were the original owner or not.
Times apparently have changed. It must cost an awful lot of money in shipping, labor and parts costs when so many people decide that they want to send in a perfectly working detector to have it "tuned up".
Can we blame them for passing some of this cost on to non original owners? I can't.
I have always been thankful for the lifetime warranty, I know I won't be left hanging in 3 or 5 years.

 (correction)... My detector was not working properly so it was sent in for more than just a "tune up". I am aware that due to so many people talking about "free repairs" that Tesoro gets a LOT of detectors for so-called "tune-ups". There will probably come a day when Tesoro will crack down on all the "non-original" owners and only those who send in warranty cards will get service at no charge. I don't know what kind of "tracking system" or computer program they have for knowing who is the original owners or not, so like I said,..I am the original owner of all my other Tesoro detectors and the warranty cards were sent in so I deserve to get the benefit from the lifetime warranty. I was honest with them about not being the original owner of this ONE detector. I was asking in my post (out of curiousity),...if any of you had ever been asked the question," Are you the original owner?" I knew the minute he said it that there would be a fee. There is no problem here. I am paying them the fee and chalking this one up to experience and a lesson learned. Happy Hunting, Good Luck, and Best wishes from RDF :tesoro::detecting:

From what I have read this is a new policy at Tesoro. The lifetime warranty really does apply to the original owner now. They will no longer be doing free repairs to used machines. That makes sense. Why buy new If you can get free service on a used one? I know from now on any Tesoro I buy will be new.

Dan

A lot of talk on the used market seems to be, 'hey buy my machine and they will work on it for free". Well, It doesn't seem unreasonable to me for Tesoro to charge to repair their machines that are not sent in by the original owner.

 Case in point. Go to Ebay and search "used Tesoro metal detectors". Read the one that says," Tesoro Golden Sabre Metal Detector LIFETIME WARRANTY Treasure Finder USA Made" .....you will see what I mean about people who "talk too much". It has ruined it for the rest of us who have enjoyed free service on Tesoros (new or old). If this is a true policy then Tesoro needs to make a statement to the public on their website and let people know so they won't get blindsided like me. This may be the beginning of the end for Tesoro because their service department has been a major factor in people buying Tesoro metal detectors. My personal metal detector dealer quit selling Tesoros. He said, " The company is going in the wrong direction" and he was also upset about smellyco who now sells Tesoros. I guess all good things must come to an end. Get ready for a flood of used Tesoros on Ebay...(if this is all true).:tesoro:

I've benefitted from their generosity in the past by getting used machines fixed for free. But why buy a new one for full retail value if they do this? How does working for free make any business sense? Who of us would do that? They also paid for the return shipping, so it wasn't only for free, it was fixing our used equipment at a loss.

So which business plan is more logical? Have people pay $50 (or more) for repairs to used equipment or keep fixing them at a loss and discourage new sales? I think what this will do is lower the value on the used market as people may opt for new machines instead.

Dan

I've always wondered about this as I know of no other product that is covered no matter how old or how many owners. At this point, the only time I've been charged was for a new coil (at cost) due to a crack in the old one on a used, new to me, machine.

I have never had to send one in . but 50.00 is reasonable for sure. depends on the repair , some may be expensive and some not if you think thats badd my bliss is going on 4 months in for repair

Yep that's gotta get expensive for Tesoro! Especially fixing 2nd, 3rd and 4th hand used detectors and shipping them back on their dime. I still don't know of any detectors that would actually require a "tune-up". Do you replace plugs, points and condenser? What parts would wear in a detector requiring a tune-up?

I have to send a coil back. Yes they did ask for a copy of the receipt, but this is to be expected. I have experience with just two detector manufacturers. Tesoro and whites. Both have been exceptional customer service. Be nice if that was the way every thing worked.

Yep Just did Yesterday matter of fact and I told him no I am not the original owner and he said we will have to charge $50.00 for any repair and service . I simply said no problem paid over the phone and now waiting on my Banditio II to get back from Tesoro all tuned and ready to go . To me Fair is fair if you are not the original owner I still think they give great service and if they have to charge a fee so be it that fee also covers shipping back to you as well

I will not go as far as say All Tesoros I buy from here on out will be new . I will however be causious of what I buy and from whom just to watch out for this . I do however understand that Tesoro has ate a lot of cost on years past from shipping and labor cost due to tune ups ! and repair to send back detectors to NON Original owners Cudos to them for the past but they have to control cost somehow . Ebay is one of the places that a ;ot of Detectors are sold . So sometimes they come to the buyer a lot worse shape than said so the buyer has to send it in for repair and the Warranty states LIfetime for Original owner and we all know when bought on ebay !! Means . JMHO

Really folks, $50 isn't that big a deal for top quality service from Tesoro.Just got a call today from them about my Silver Sabre II,first question asked, are you the original owner?Nope. So the $50 charge was paid over the phone and that included what needed to be done as stated on the note I sent, shipping back to me,tuning/calibration and I assume a thorough going over, plus was told if anything major needed fixed they'd get back to me,so to me $50 is money well spent to get your machine back to peak operating levels.

Here's something for Tesoro maybe to consider:Why not offer the new owner of any used machine the option to purchase a warranty for their new to them machine?

At some point we will have to take into consideration the $50 and any additional costs for repair compared to the value of the detector.
A Compadre purchased used for say $100,then sent in and charged $50 plus, suddenly becomes not so attractive when a new one can be picked up for $165.
Same with the older models. Unless you absolutely can't part with that Bandit II, it may not be worth the cost.
I am sorry for anyone though that got blindsided by the fees, we pretty much know that it won't happen again to the readers of this forum.
