CTX Worth the $ or stay with the 705?

We understand it is just your opinion but your opinion is wrong and misleading when giving advice to others. It is obvious that you actually know very little about the CTX but you know the ET very well. Most of us has moved up from the ET or SE and we already know the strengths of the CTX over the other models. Most of us has been in the hobby many many years and know that it is not so much what detector one is using but how well you know the one that you are using. You out hunt your Dad because you know your ET better than he knows his CTX, not because the ET is the better machine. Who needs to grow up? I bet many of us here were metal detecting when you were still in diapers.

he is the prime example I would use when telling someone to be very cautious of the advice you receive......I cant believe how many times I see someone telling someone else this machine is better than that one only to find out they dont know anything/very little about one of them.

Being new to the forums, you probably don't know the rules yet..... http://www.findmall.com/read.php?85,1734669

Your post was probably deleted because the video had an ad in it.

The CTX is one of many machines that has it's own forum here on Findmall. The forums are a place to come and learn. To share information and enjoy the overall discussion of a great hobby. I am happy you like the E Trac. It has a great forum full of users that swear by the model. Is one model better than he next? A matter of opinion. But here in the CTX forum the opinion is obviously yes. Is one fishing pole and reel better than the next? I can catch fish with a stick and string, and hook. Good luck to you in future hunts. Enjoy the time with your dad. As a person who is watching the health of his father deteriorate I will say that I wish I had more time with mine.

not so much what detector one is using but how well you know the one that you are using. These are true words some learn right away while some it will take a while to understand them.
I have a CTX 3030 also along with my Sovereign GT and can do so much better with the GT only because i spent many hours learning this detector and have had a Sovereign since 1996 so I know every little sound it makes. I got less than 20 hours on my CTX 3030 and dig a lot of trash and rusty nails with it, but I am still in the learning stages yet and have to dig a lot to see what it is until I feel comfortable with it. It has really surprised me several time with what this detector can do as I seen things I would have not believed if I didn't see it myself. Like the 1919 wheatie that was around 7 inches down standing on edge with my 6 inch coil, how I know this is I was using my Uni Probe and carefully dug down to it so I wouldn't disturb it.
Talking on knowing your detector I have a guy with a Explorer XS which is the first one made in 1999 and he find more coin than those using a SE Pro or a E-Trac as he hunts with some buddies that have them and he kicks their butt 95% of the time and the only reason is he knows this detector well and knows every little squeak it makes. he has wore out 2 of the XSs and is on his third one and doing just as good, so it was not just a hot XS, but how well he knows his detector. I am going to let him use my CTX and bet he wont like it until he gets to know it well, then I may have to fight him to get it back.
Some of the things I have learned in my 41 years detecting:
Just because it cost more don't mean it will find more
A detector is only as good as how well you know it.
air test and coin you bury do not give you true depth or how well it can do, but can give you idea of where some targets will read and how some will sound.
if you want deep coins you have to wear headphones or you may never hear the deep and iffy signals.
I also feel you want to get into this hobby to make money you maybe should try some different hobby, but if you get into the hobby to have fun and know it may take days before you get a good find you will enjoy this hobby as most of us do.
Good luck everyone and have patience and learn your detector well and it will do well for you.

so stick with the 705 then? big jump 705 to a ctx, big learning curve

The learning curve is what you make it to be as you can make it easier by not trying any patterns until you understand it better and use the stock programs and maybe tweak them a little. You have to spend the time to get to know it like any detector to get the most out of it and you do have to use it as often as you can in order to learn it. Those that go out maybe once a week for a hour or so it will take a while while those that go out 3 or 4 times a week for 2 or more hours will learn it faster.
Myself it took me about a month to get to fully understand the Minelab Sovereign, must have been over 100 hours, but learned it well and have some great finds out of places other gave up on. The Explorers I had a problem with, but never spent the time with it as much as my Sovereign. Now the CTX I have maybe 20 hours on it and getting better with it, but still have a bit to learn from experience as digging many of these hits I am not 100% on.
Now the 705 I have tried a little with and I couldn't do as well with it as my Sovereign or even the Explorer, but that is 2 different class of detectors in my opinion. If you want the good stuff you have to be willing to use a good detector and understand it well and not be afraid to dig some trash to until you know the detector well. If you are doing well with your 705 and understand it well and picking out some good finds in many well worked area you may want to keep it, but if you want to move up to a higher level and have more finds others have left for you than you can go to a CTX.

This is some of the most helpful advice I have seen in this thread. I recently had to watch both my parents go through something and let me tell you something.... It can make one look at life a little bit different. Enjoy what you got. The CTX 3030 is a great machine. If you guys want to keep beating it in the ground then I suggest writing an essay about it and get over it.
